About Brooklyn Perinatal Network (BPN)
BPN is a nonprofit organization focused on improving maternal and infant health in Brooklyn, NY. Since 1988, BPN has been dedicated to preventing and reducing infant and maternal mortality in our communities. Our core purpose is to enable at-risk residents to access vital healthcare information, coordinate care, and secure essential public health resources. We provide comprehensive services to families during pregnancy and the postpartum period, including case management, education, and community outreach.
As we continue to grow, BPN is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Accountant to oversee the organization’s financial functions and ensure our continued success. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute directly to BPN’s mission by ensuring sound financial operations, as a member of the management team.
Position Summary
The Senior Accountant will be responsible for the day-to-day accounting and financial reporting for BPN. You will work closely with the Executive Director, management team, and the Board Treasurer to manage all financial operations, reporting, and compliance, while ensuring the organization’s financial health and sustainability. The position is full-time, hybrid, and reports directly to the Executive Director/CEO.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Operations:
• Oversee and manage all aspects of accounting, including accounts payable and receivable, payroll, journal entries, and general ledger maintenance.
• Reconcile balance sheet accounts and prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
• Prepare and track budget to actuals, identifying variances and making recommendations for corrective action.
• Ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and nonprofit financial practices.
• Maintain internal controls to safeguard BPN’s assets and ensure accuracy and integrity of financial data.
Reporting & Compliance:
• Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports to the Executive Director to support financial reporting requirements and Board reporting requirements.
• Manage external grantor financial reporting, ensuring all funds are properly tracked and restricted grants are adhered to.
• Oversee the preparation of audit workpapers; completion of audit responses; compliance with audit requirements; as well as implementation of internal controls and remediation strategies.
• Ensure tax-related compliance deadlines are met by providing timely information and materials to the CPA/vendor.
• Submit financial reports as required by funding agencies and other external stakeholders.
Financial Strategy & Leadership:
• Act as a strategic financial advisor to the Executive Director, offering insights and recommendations on budgeting, financial forecasting, and long-term financial planning.
• Work with program managers to ensure that financial resources are allocated effectively in alignment with program goals.
• Support the development of BPN’s annual budget, forecasting, and cash flow projections.
Supervision & Collaboration:
• Supervise accounting support staff or consultants, ensuring work is completed on time, accurately, and in compliance with BPN’s accounting standards.
• Collaborate and liaise with external vendors (i.e., external CPA, auditors, Compliance and Risk Officer) as necessary to ensure effective and efficient financial management, internal controls and oversight.
Technology & Systems Management:
• Work regularly and efficiently with FundEZ financial reporting and AvidXchange bill pay programs to ensure timely and accurate transaction processing and reporting.
• Leverage AvidXchange’s payment automation features to streamline accounts payable processes, reduce manual tasks, and update workflows as needed for greater efficiency.
• Oversee payroll processing through ADP.
• Ensure data integrity and recommend improvements, as necessary.
• Collaborate with the IT vendor to troubleshoot issues, implement enhancements, and maximize the effectiveness of accounting tools.
• Work with software vendors, as appropriate, to support system maintenance and improvements, recommending updates or optimizations to enhance financial operations.
Desired Skills & Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Required).
• 5+ years of experience in nonprofit accounting or similar financial management roles.
• Strong understanding of grant accounting, and nonprofit accounting practices.
• Experience with FundEZ, AvidXchange, and ADP is required.
• Knowledge of nonprofit GAAP and financial reporting regulations.
• CPA preferred but not required.
• Exceptional proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and financial analysis.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial data to non-financial stakeholders.
• Proven ability to manage multiple tasks/projects, meet deadlines, and prioritize in a dynamic environment.
• Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and organizational abilities.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Demonstrated experience with grant application processes and management.
