Senior Accountant
Position Description
The Senior Accountant position reports to the Controller and CFO and is tasked with many of the accounting operations of the company. This may include, but is not limited to, the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk. The Senior Accountant may also be responsible for enhancing the accuracy of the company's reported financial results and ensuring that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles or international financial reporting standards.
The scope of the Senior Accountant position is much larger in a small business, where the position is also responsible for cash management and risk management.
Senior Accountant Accountabilities
Management
Assists with the oversight of operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department's goals and objectives
Assists with the oversight of the accounting operations of subsidiary corporations, especially their control systems, transaction-processing operations, and policies and procedures
Transactions
Ensures that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner
Ensure that all reasonable discounts are taken on accounts payable
Ensure that accounts receivable are collected promptly
Process payroll in a timely manner
Ensure that periodic bank reconciliations are completed
Ensure that required debt payments are made on a timely basis
Assists with the maintenance of the chart of accounts
Assists with the maintenance of an orderly accounting filing system
Assists with the maintenance of a system of controls over accounting transactions
Reporting
Assists with timely and complete financial statements
Assists with the preparation of the corporate annual review
Assists with recommending benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company operations
Assists with calculating and issuing financial and operating metrics
Manage the production of the annual and rolling forecasts
Calculate variances from the forecasts and report significant issues to management
Provide for a system of management cost and contract reports
Provide financial analyses as needed for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations
Compliance
Assists with the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit
Assists with monitoring debt levels and compliance with debt covenants
Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
Desired Senior Accountant Qualifications
The Senior Accountant candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or business administration, or equivalent business experience and 3+ years of progressively responsible experience for a company or division of a large corporation. Preference will be given to candidates with the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designations.
Senior Accountant Working Conditions
Primarily in an office or remote environment. May be expected to travel as needed, as well as to potential acquirees to conduct due diligence. Periodic weekend or evening work might be required.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m EST. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available during the “core” work hours of 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and must work 40.0 hours each week to maintain full time status. Part time positions will be discussed during an interview and finalized at hire.
Senior Accountant Supervision
The Senior Accountant reports to the Controller and CFO and may supervise accounting staff within a client matrix team. In our organization, this means that the Senior Accountant needs very strong management skills.
Experience with and knowledge of the following:
Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both in writing and verbally, with management, vendors, and clients.
