
Position Summary
The Senior Energy Engineer is responsible for leading energy engineering and analysis for energy retrofit and consulting projects across multiple customer classes and markets.
Position Details
- Utilizes comprehensive experience of building systems and operating sequences to assess energy efficiency, infrastructure, and resilience opportunities.
- Provides energy evaluation / assessment for Energy Conservation Measures (ECM’s) and coordinates with Project Developer and Solutions Executive throughout the project development process.
- Supports and leads energy audits (Feasibility, Preliminary and Investment Grade) at more complex commercial & institutional facilities to identify and recommend energy efficiency improvements.
- Develops field measurement data plans and oversees collection of measurement data in support of energy project development using meters, loggers and other client-owned control and data systems.
- Creates building energy simulations utilizing approved simulation programs such as Trane Trace, eQuest (DOE-2.2) and others, and evaluates modeled building performance to codes such as ASHRAE 90.1 or CA Title-24.
- Utilizes Excel to perform energy analysis on Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) and evaluates the operation of existing building systems; investigates and develops new analysis methodologies and approaches.
- Interacts with internal and external design teams in performance-based new construction pursuits and generates energy documentation required to support LEED, Energy Star, EPACT 2006 and EISA 2007 project submission. Acts as energy lead in the LEED submission process.
- Works with Southland clients to procure rebates and performance-based incentives associated with implemented ECMs.
- Prepares financial models related to payment, which may include ROI, life cycle costing and internal rate of return and similar metrics from the client’s perspective.
- Supports development of client technical proposals, reports, ECM-specific RFPs as required.
- Works closely with client facility staff to identify technical and operational problems, goals and opportunities.
Qualifications
- Strong communication, interpersonal, writing and problem-solving skills.
- Strong knowledge with utility rate design, energy markets, demand response programs and generation system marginal cost analysis.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, including Word and Excel.
- In-depth experience and knowledge of the energy project development process from feasibility through project execution and post-construction support.
- Strong knowledge of energy efficiency and/or HVAC (design and construction).
- Demonstrated ability in the use and leveraging of architectural and MEP drawings and specifications for the purpose of building performance assessment.
- Field experience assessing, diagnosing and enhancing building systems, equipment operation and sequencing.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and qualify energy savings and implement complex technical solutions involving supply side savings opportunities, water conservation, trash management, distributed power and generation systems, and renewable energy technology.
- Experience with computer simulation of building energy performance using building modeling software such as Trane Trace 3D, IES and EQuest (DOE-2.2) and their use in both building energy code compliance and energy performance modeling.
- Ability to analyze and diagnose problematic operation identified during energy audits and troubleshooting of building systems for large commercial buildings, including central CHW and HW plants and built-up air handlers.
- Thorough understanding of utility rates and billing tariff analysis.
- Experience in rebates and performance-based utility incentive programs both for energy retrofit projects and for new construction.
- Demonstrated capability of preparing life cycle analysis for federal (DOE BLCC 5.3) or non-federal clients.
- Experience with engineering calculations for chillers, boilers, fans, pumps, motors, controls, compressors, and lighting systems to determine energy savings compared to baseline equipment and / or building codes.
- Excellent skills in data manipulation, analysis and visualization. Experience with advanced computer system and network design and cyber security requirements.
- Good client interaction skills, ability to interview client facility staff to probe for areas of opportunity, and identify problems and desired outcomes.

Pay: Final pay is determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data. For (Colorado/New York City/California/Washington/Maryland) this ranges from $91,300.00-$136,950.00 plus annual incentive, benefits, and retirement program as outlined above.
