Senior Mechanical Designer (Hybrid)
Maplewood, MN | $80,000–$110,000 + ESOP | Direct-Hire | Hybrid
This role supports the design, layout, and modeling of mechanical systems for complex industrial projects. The Senior Mechanical Designer/Drafter partners closely with mechanical engineers, project managers, and cross-functional teams to develop detailed 2D drawings and 3D models that support fabrication, installation, and long-term system performance. The position emphasizes technical depth, coordination across disciplines, and practical design execution from concept through construction.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead development of mechanical layouts, 2D drawings, and 3D models for industrial systems and facilities.
- Create and maintain general arrangement drawings, piping layouts, isometrics, and construction documentation.
- Interpret client requirements, specifications, and site data to guide mechanical design decisions.
- Coordinate mechanical designs with electrical, structural, architectural, and controls disciplines.
- Serve as a technical resource for mechanical modeling, layout coordination, and clash detection.
- Support equipment sizing and selection for mechanical systems such as piping, HVAC, pumps, and valves.
- Participate in project planning, scheduling, and design reviews to support successful execution.
- Prepare specifications and support vendor coordination, procurement, and fabrication activities.
- Incorporate feedback from field observations, fabrication, and client reviews to refine designs.
- Estimate design effort, manage assigned tasks independently, and contribute to project cost planning.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and other design-related efforts as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Associate's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Drafting/Design, or a related technical discipline.
- Eight or more years of progressive experience in mechanical design and 3D modeling.
- Strong proficiency with 2D and 3D CAD tools such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Plant 3D, Revit, or Inventor.
- Experience producing detailed drawings and models for industrial or commercial projects.
- Working knowledge of mechanical design principles, building codes, and industry standards.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, project managers, vendors, and clients.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with piping systems, process mechanical skids, HVAC systems, or industrial utilities.
- Familiarity with advanced modeling tools or simulation software.
- Background supporting fabrication, installation, or construction coordination activities.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering or consulting environments.
