Senior Mechanical Engineer – Automated Machines
Are you an experienced mechanical design engineer ready to lead complex automation projects from concept through customer acceptance? Our client is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to drive the mechanical development of high-precision custom equipment used in advanced manufacturing environments. This is a hands-on, high-impact role where you’ll collaborate across teams to solve technical challenges and bring innovative solutions to life.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead mechanical design efforts for custom automated systems from initial concept through installation and customer follow-up
- Create 3D models and detailed drawings of complex mechanical assemblies using SolidWorks (preferred)
- Develop and maintain accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) for all mechanical components
- Analyze tolerance stack-ups, stress, loading, and adjust designs to ensure manufacturability and long-term reliability
- Guide the selection of reliable, cost-effective components and coordinate with purchasing for procurement
- Provide hands-on support on the shop floor to verify fit, function, and design intent
- Collaborate with electrical/control engineers on integrated automation solutions
- Support machine build, debug, testing, and customer acceptance
- Coordinate peer reviews, drawing checks, and redline revisions to ensure design accuracy
- Develop cost estimates and design concepts during early project phases
- Engage with customers to understand project goals, technical requirements, and timelines
- Ensure mechanical solutions meet performance goals including cycle time, durability, and compliance
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME or MSME required)
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in machine design, ideally for custom or high-precision automation systems
- Expertise in 3D CAD modeling and drafting (SolidWorks preferred), including GD&T application
- Strong understanding of pneumatics, standard automation components (conveyors, indexing, pick & place, etc.), and metrology systems
- Familiarity with feedback and control systems, as well as special processes such as dispensing, laser welding, and thermal processing
- Strong problem-solving abilities and willingness to be actively involved from design to installation
- Excellent communication, time management, and collaboration skills
- U.S. citizenship or permanent residency required due to ITAR compliance
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Onsite role in a professional office and manufacturing environment
- Regular presence required on the shop floor for assembly support and verification
- Must be able to climb ladders, work in confined spaces, and lift up to 50 lbs occasionally
- Must be able to wear required PPE and work around high-noise equipment
