A growing outpatient mental health group practice in Massachusetts is seeking an experienced Senior Medical Biller to lead billing operations and revenue follow-up for psychotherapy and psychiatric medication management services.
This role is ideal for someone who understands Massachusetts payers deeply, is comfortable owning billing decisions, and can work collaboratively within a team environment. We are looking for a biller who values accuracy, accountability, and open communication.
Position Overview
The Senior Medical Biller will own the full billing cycle and serve as the primary point person for claims, denials, payer communication, and clearinghouse issues. While billing support staff may assist with insurance verification and administrative tasks, this role carries responsibility for billing strategy, follow-up, and revenue protection.
Key Responsibilities
Submit, manage, and track claims for outpatient mental health services
Work directly with Massachusetts commercial insurers and MassHealth managed care plans
Monitor accounts receivable and proactively follow up on unpaid, denied, or rejected claims
Investigate and resolve claim rejections, denials, and underpayments in a timely manner
Communicate regularly with insurance payer support lines and clearinghouses
Identify denial patterns and recommend system or workflow improvements
Ensure compliance with payer-specific billing and documentation requirements
Stay current on billing rule changes, payer updates, and mental health coding guidelines
Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff to resolve documentation or coding issues
Support accurate reporting and provide updates on billing trends and risks
Respond professionally to billing questions from staff or clients when needed
Required Qualifications
2–3+ years of experience in mental health billing
Direct experience billing in Massachusetts (required)
Strong familiarity with:
MassHealth managed care plans
Massachusetts commercial payers
Demonstrated experience with:
Claim rejections and denials
Appeals and corrections
Coordination of benefits issues
Comfortable calling insurance companies and navigating payer systems independently
Solid understanding of CPT coding and diagnosis placement for mental health services
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage follow-ups without close supervision
Preferred Qualifications
Bilingual (English/Spanish) – strongly preferred
Experience billing for group practices with multiple clinicians
Familiarity with TherapyNotes or similar behavioral health EHRs
Experience billing both psychotherapy and psychiatric medication management
Knowledge of Massachusetts telehealth billing requirements
Work Environment & Schedule
Part-time or full-time opportunities available (based on experience)

Compensation
$32–40 per hour, based on experience and Massachusetts mental health billing expertise
