
Position Summary
Assist the Division Safety Program in enforcing and regulating all safety procedures to ensure that Southland Industries meets all safety requirements in the field by managing and coordinating all division safety activities.
Position Details
- Conduct on-site safety inspections, observations, investigations, and ensure compliance with Cal/OSHA, State, Federal, NIOSH and ANSI rules and regulations.
- Resolves site safety issues and provide emergency response as needed that arises from sub-contractors, customers, employees, and company managers.
- Documents safety inspections, citing dangerous or unsafe areas/procedures and recommending corrective procedures. Provides recommendations for correcting non-compliance issues. Ensures cited issues are corrected within designated timeframe.
- Prepare safety manuals and guidelines, including job specific submittals.
- Implement all aspects of company safety manual and ensure that field employees and subcontractors are complying.
- Review JHA’s, AHA’s, PTP’s and MOP’s (Method of Procedures) plans to ensure safe work practices.
- Lead safety culture initiatives and facilitate frequent safety-related conversations with employees to ensure active engagement and application of Southlands philosophy to daily safe work practices.
- Conduct safety training and record-keeping for employees, sub-contractors, and where Southland is prime, including New Hire Orientation, Equipment Training, Excavation, Fall Protection, Haz Com, Confined Space, Lockout/Tag out, Crane and Rigging, etc.
- Conduct incident, accident and near-miss investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.
- Review critical lift plans to ensure all safety standards and protocols are met to prevent accidents, injuries, or damage to equipment and materials.
- Responsible for personal, professional development. Maintain professional development through training, seminars, etc. that enhance knowledge of environmental, health, and safety, crane and lifting operations, rigging, forklift, and mobile elevating work platform (MEWP).
- Interact effectively and professionally with all levels of employees within the organization, both management and staff alike, vendors, clients, and others.
- Participate in owner and client meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Work mainly in field settings in day or night environments.
- Considerable indoor/outdoor work in hot, cold, humid, or rainy weather conditions is required to inspect various construction/commercial sites and facilities.
- Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate vehicles, tools, instruments, and related equipment.
- Extended periods of time on feet and walking or standing on even and uneven concreate floors, or irregular surfaces or terrain, climbing ladders, steps, stairs, and bending, stoop, crawl, kneel, sitting, twisting, or pushing may be required at times.
- May encounter loud noises, flashing lights, strong smells, and dust.
- Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs. may be required.
- Ability to work flexible hours, nights and weekends.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Health or Environmental Applied Sciences or related discipline preferred
- First Aid/CPR certification required
- CPR and First Aid instructor preferred
- OSHA 510 preferred
- OSHA 30 required
- OSHA 40 HAZWOPER preferred.
- CHST, ASP or STSC certification required
- Rigging and signaling person credentials preferred.
- California Class C Driver License with good DMV record is required.
- 3+ years’ experience in related field, including employee training experience
- Proficient oral and written communication skills
- Strong knowledge of OSHA, Cal/OSHA, OSHA CFR 1926 standards, NFPA, NIOSH, ANSI and EPA standards.
- Excellent problem solving, verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent customer service and organizational skills.
- Proficient computer skills-experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Sound knowledge of safety operating processes and procedures
- Spends up to 75% of working time on active work sites.

Pay: Final pay is determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data. For California, this ranges from $95,000.00-$115,000.00 yearly plus annual incentive, benefits, and retirement program as outlined above.
