We are seeking a Senior Staff Accountant to assist the accounting function, ensure financial integrity, and provide company-wide support during this exciting growth phase.

    Senior Staff Accountant:

    The Senior Staff Accountant plays a key role in the financial operations of a high-growth Planet Fitness operating company. Responsible for core accounting functions, monthly close activities, financial reporting, and operational analysis, the Senior Staff Accountant ensures accuracy, compliance, and efficiency within a dynamic environment. This role supports a multi-unit franchise business with several revenue streams, membership-based recurring billing, significant transactional volume, and a large unit and lease portfolio.

    The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, analytical, and proactive, with strong experience in GAAP accounting, multi-entity operations, and financial systems. They will collaborate closely with the Finance and Accounting Manager, Controller, F&A, Operations, HR, and external auditors.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    General Accounting & Close Activities

    Perform and own key components of the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close across multiple entities.

    Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, and financial statements.

    Maintain and reconcile balance sheet and income statement accounts with a focus on accuracy and completeness.

    Ensure timely consolidation and reporting of financial results across all operating locations in accordance with GAAP and internal accounting policies

    Revenue & Membership Accounting

    Validate revenue recognition from Planet Fitness membership systems (e.g., ABC Fitness Solutions or similar platforms).

    Reconcile membership billing, collections, and EFT revenue activity.

    Monitor and resolve discrepancies in deferred revenue, chargebacks, cancellations, and refunds.

    Financial Reporting & Analysis

    Prepare internal financial reports, variance analyses, and KPI summaries for senior management.

    Support budgeting and forecasting processes with data and analytical insights.

    Assist in preparation of lender, investor, and franchise-required financial reporting packages.

    Accounts Payable, Payroll, and Fixed Assets

    Review AP coding for accuracy and adherence to chart of accounts.

    Support payroll journal entries and related reconciliations in coordination with HR.

    Maintain fixed asset schedules, depreciation entries, and capital expenditure tracking.

    Compliance & Controls

    Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal policies, franchise requirements, and audit standards.

    Maintain and improve internal controls, documentation, and accounting procedures.

    Assist in annual financial audits and coordinate with external auditors (i.e., Deloitte).

    Systems, Process Improvement & Cross-Functional Support

    Utilize and optimize accounting / enterprise systems (e.g., Microsoft Great Plains / Dynamics, ABC Financial / FitnessBI, Adaptive Insights, Paycom).

    Improve workflow efficiency and automation within a high-volume, multi-location environment.

    Collaborate with Operations to support new club openings, club performance reviews, and financial process training.

    Qualifications / Experiences:

    Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

    3–6+ years of relevant accounting experience; franchise, retail / consumer, multi-unit, membership or subscription-based, or fitness industry experience.

    Strong knowledge of US GAAP.

    Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Great Plains (or similar enterprise grade accounting system) and Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, Power Query).

    Experience with multi-entity accounting and high-volume transactional environments.

    Demonstrated experience with monthly close and financial reporting.

    Ability to work autonomously, manage multiple deadlines, and maintain strong attention to detail.

    Preferred Qualifications

    CPA or CPA candidacy.

    Experience with ABC Fitness membership management or similar billing platforms.

    Experience with real estate leases and NNN billing / statements

    Experience with or understanding of ASC842, ASC805, and ASC606

    Familiarity with BI or reporting tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Adaptive Insights).
