    Job Description

    This position reports to:  Director, Platform Engineering

    We are seeking a Manager to grow and lead our Time Series Database team.  

    The MetricBase (name of ServiceNow Time Series product) is responsible for building the database and providing storage API for higher layer applications. Our largest customers are always pushing the limits of the backend storage in terms of size of the data, speed of IO, as well as number of concurrent transactions. Performance, reliability and scalability is always at the core of our work.  What you get to do in this role:

    • Manage platform development activities in a fast-paced environment
    • Work closely with product management, design, support and other dev teams to deliver high-quality solutions
    • Manage day-to-day activities of the development team
    • Use critical thinking skills to solve difficult and sometimes ambiguous problems
    • Deliver and outstanding experience for our customers In order to be successful in this role, we need someone who has:
    • 8+ years of software industry experience with 1-3 years of experience as a manager leading software developers
    • Solid understanding of software design, development, testing, and problem solving
    • Able to hire top talent and build a productive team
    • Understanding of best practices for object-oriented and modularized software. Particular emphasis on Java
    • Understanding of web technologies: HTTP and backend programming of web applications
    • Repeated demonstrated success completing complex projects, on time

    WHAT YOU GET TO DO IN THIS ROLE:

    • Management of departmental resources, staffing, mentoring, and enhancing and maintaining a best-of-class engineering team
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS ROLE YOU HAVE:

    • 6+ years of experience with technologies relevant to SN and advanced coding skills with high quality results. ​
    • Strong hands-on experience with open source tools and agile development environments. ​
    • Fluency in one or more relevant programming language (Java, C++, Ruby. Shell, JavaScript) ​
    • Able to articulate broad concepts and use those concepts to understand and develop solutions for problems. ​
    • Ability to plan and execute a project based on organization priorities, context, risks and desired outcomes.

    • Experience developing a platform
    • Experience working in a DevOps environment
    • Aptitude for understanding new technologies quickly
    • Experience developing web applications at scale
    • Experience with supporting troubleshooting efforts of difficult production issues e.g. memory leaks, network problems, intermittent failures etc. across the stack
    • Relational Database Experience: Developing on, troubleshooting and optimizing performance
    • Experience working in a customer focused environment
    • Loves database technologies
    • Excellent written and verbal communication
