General Purpose
The Sewer Collections Worker I performs a variety of semi-skilled labor and maintenance functions in the Sewer Division.
Reporting Relationships
Supervision Received: The Sewer Collections Worker I receives general and close supervision from the Public Utilities Director.
Supervision Exercised: None
Essential Functions
- Participates in work projects initiated to repair and maintain sanitary and storm sewer lines, lift stations, manholes, collection boxes and other facilities to insure proper and adequate sanitary and storm sewer flow for the City.
- Operates equipment in digging and filling in trenches for new sewers digging around water mains and valves for repair work and unplugging sanitary and storm sewer lines.
- Operates various construction and maintenance equipment such as: backhoe, dump trucks, front-end loaders, sewer routing machines, and tapping machines.
- Performs a variety of semi-skilled pipe fitting, plumbing and general maintenance work in laying new sewer and making sewer connections.
- Checks and services assigned equipment as directed.
- Reports mechanical problems for shop repair.
- Will assist at the Water Reclamation Facility as needed.
- May assist in maintaining, constructing, and repairing streets, sidewalks, water meters/lines, and other public facilities. Drives a snow plow as needed.
- Maintains a clean and safe working environment.

Special Qualifications (Licenses, Certifications, etc.)
Must obtain within six months and maintain:
- Class B commercial driver's license;
- First Aid, CPR, AED Certification;
- Flagger Certification;
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High school graduate or equivalent, and
- One (1) year experience in the operation of light equipment, and
- One (1) Year experience in maintenance and repair of sanitary and storm sewer facilities, or
- An equivalent combination of related education and experience
Work Environment and Physical Demands
The Sewer Collections Worker I works in variable weather and traffic conditions with appropriate safety equipment. Must work safely in a variety of dangerous situations; including busy traffic situations and in/around trenches and excavations. Work will include safely entering confined spaces, manholes and vaults. The Sewer Collections Service Worker II may work in unpredictable circumstances and may be exposed to human waste. Tasks regularly involve muscular strain, including walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching and lifting up to 25-50 pounds. Talking, hearing and seeing are essential to performing job requirements. Common eye, hand and finger dexterity is required for most essential functions.
