Position Title: Shelter Residential Advisor
Reports To: Shelter Lead
Physical Location: Thrive Youth Center, San Antonio, TX 78207 (On-site)

Thrive Youth Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit in San Antonio, TX serving young adults, 18-24 years old, experiencing homelessness. Thrive provides emergency shelter and short-term housing for clients in apartments around San Antonio. The mission of Thrive Youth Center is to provide LGBTQ+ homeless young adults with a safe and supportive environment to facilitate their empowerment toward transforming their lives, while the vision is to create an equitable community where all LGBTQ+ young adults flourish. Position Summary:
Thrive Youth Center is seeking a young adult Residential Advisor to serve the needs of clients experiencing homelessness in a homeless shelter setting. The primary purpose of a Residential Advisor (RA) is to focus on client safety and shelter living life skills with an emphasis on preparing the client for self-sufficiency. The RA is to perform daily, consistent, and effective crisis intervention, providing information to appropriate staff and Haven partners regarding a client’s mental health and physical well-being to ensure appropriate services are being provided. This full-time position will provide support for clients at the Thrive Youth Center Emergency Shelter on the Haven for Hope campus.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Role Responsibilities
Client Residential Support 45-55%
Provide first-class care and residential support for all sheltered clients in the Thrive Emergency Shelter.
Monitor all areas of the Thrive Emergency Shelter to ensure compliance with the rules, policies, procedures, and protocols.
Respond to clients’ requests, complaints, and inquiries. Issue hygiene products and personal supplies to new clients entering shelter services.
Conduct regular inspections, chore checks, documenting opportunities and celebrating the clients’ successes.
Identify and respond to any client who is experiencing a problem or crisis to ensure they are safe and that other on-campus service providers are aware of the situation and able to respond with appropriate services.
Conduct initial assessments for client needs at program entry.
Utilize agency vehicles for client off-campus events, as assigned.
Administrative and Outreach Responsibilities: 25-35%
Utilize the case management system, HMIS for all relevant data and documents.
Ensure the timely completion of required documentation and ensure required information is entered as required.
Submit referral forms to partner agencies (on-site and off-site), for benefits, education, and employment assistance.
Assist potential and prospective clients in resource navigation for the following needs: LGBTQ+ specific resources, housing, rent-assistance, benefits, employment, education, other shelter opportunities.
When assigned and scheduled, participate in outreach efforts for prospective clients.
Office Support or Extended Organization Assistance: 5-10%
Participate in required monthly training as assigned.
Ensure office cleanliness in general office spaces.
Assist other Thrive departments with activities, as needed and assigned.
Work Environment & Skills
Noise level is moderate, as the majority of job duties are present in the Thrive Emergency Shelter. Flexibility in regard to employment responsibilities, duties, activities, and hours scheduled.
Proficiency in computer technology and systems for organization programming (Microsoft and Google systems).
Daily use of a cell phone for client interactions and conversations (reimbursement opportunities available).
Work environment requirement to perform regular duties both indoors and outdoors.
Standard physical activity such as periodic standing, walking, sitting, and basic motor skills to access computer files for information and data entry.
Normal walking requirements include the ability to move in and around personal workspace and to and from other areas, including walking stairs several times each day.
Required Qualifications:
Completion of High School Diploma/GED Commensurate experience in residential support within community programs serving youth, at-risk young adults, homeless individuals, and/or diverse communities.
Demonstrated commitment of LGBTQ+ affirming care and experience working with marginalized youth populations.
Strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and ability to hold compassionate boundaries.
Ability to work in a collaborative, community-based setting with a diverse team and client base.
Must have a valid Texas Driver’s License, a good driving record, reliable transportation, and proper insurance coverage.
Preferred Qualifications:
CPR & BLS certification or willingness to obtain
Trauma informed care certification or willingness to obtain
Training in trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, harm reduction, substance abuse, and mental illness disorders.
Knowledge of the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) Bilingual in Spanish and English
Compensation and Benefits:
This position pays an hourly rate of $15.00 at full-time hours. Full-time benefits include employer paid medical insurance and life insurance options.
