Job Title: Shelter Security Staff
Reports To: Program Manager / Site Supervisor
Position Summary:
The Shelter Security Staff is responsible for ensuring a safe, orderly, and welcoming
environment for all clients, staff, and visitors. Security staff play a key role in maintaining
the integrity of shelter operations by monitoring activity, de-escalating conflicts, enforcing
rules, and providing a supportive presence. Ideal candidates will be reliable, observant, and
skilled in conflict resolution.
Key Responsibilities:
Access Control & Site Monitoring
• Greet and monitor all individuals entering and exiting the shelter.
• Conduct bag checks and pat-downs in accordance with site policy and trauma-informed practices.
• Screen for banned items such as drugs, alcohol, and weapons; refer clients to use
amnesty lockers for safe storage when appropriate.
• Document and report all confiscations to the Program Manager or designated
supervisor.
Rounds & Surveillance
• Conduct hourly security rounds of both the interior and exterior of the facility.
• Ensure all entrances, exits, and emergency pathways remain secure and
unobstructed.
• Observe and report any suspicious behavior, safety concerns, or maintenance
issues.
De-escalation & Conflict Management
• Use non-violent, trauma-informed de-escalation techniques to manage conflict and
promote a calm environment.
• Intervene promptly in incidents involving disruptive or unsafe behavior.
• Work collaboratively with shelter staff to support crisis intervention efforts.
Policy Enforcement & Client Support
• Enforce shelter rules and client restrictions, including curfew adherence, room or
bed restrictions, and behavioral agreements.
• Assist in documenting rule violations, behavioral incidents, and client exits.
• Provide respectful guidance to clients regarding expectations and consequences,
maintaining professionalism at all times.
General Support & Additional Duties
• Assist with food service during meal times, including setup, distribution, and clean
up.
• Help organize storage areas, donations, and common spaces as needed.
• Support shelter operations by providing coverage during staff breaks or transitions.
• Respond to emergencies, including medical or fire incidents, according to
established protocols.
• Participate in staff trainings, meetings, and drills.
Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent; security or human services background
preferred.
• Strong observational skills and the ability to respond calmly under pressure.
• Experience or training in de-escalation, conflict resolution, or crisis intervention is
highly desirable.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
• Must be able to stand, walk, and perform physical tasks for extended periods.
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, overnights, and holidays as needed.
