Shop Assistant/Mechanic-
Position Summary
The Shop Mechanic/Assistant plays a vital role in supporting field operations and ensuring the efficient functioning of equipment, tools, and materials across the company. This position is responsible for performing general shop duties, assisting with equipment maintenance and basic repairs, organizing and preparing materials for job sites, ensuring accurate inventory, and supporting deliveries or pickups as needed. The ideal candidate has hands-on mechanical aptitude, familiarity with construction tools and equipment, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. This role requires attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, physical stamina, and a commitment to safety in both the shop and on job sites.
Essential Job Functions
- Report to work on a regular and timely basis and complete the scheduled
- workday on a consistent basis.
- Must possess general automotive maintenance and repair knowledge.
- Must possess ability to operate various motor vehicles and trucks
- Receives and verifies accuracy of incoming shipments.
- Load, unload and identify materials, machinery, tools, and safety equipment then
- distribute them to the appropriate locations, according to direction given and/or
- specifications.
- Sorts and places materials on racks, shelves, or in bins according to predetermined
- sequence such as size, type, style, color, or product code. Marks materials with
- identifying information.
- Maintains accurate inventory records.
- Pulls and distributes materials, tools, or other stock items in order to fill field requests.
- Prepares merchandise for shipment, as required.
- Utilizes material handling equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, etc.
- Assist Shop Foreman with any deliveries.
- Inspect, repair, or refurbish power tools and equipment.
- Operate various woodworking tools and equipment.
- Running and operating Tool Hound
- Fabricate Rebar
- Follow all NS Giles safety standards on job sites and in the shop/yard
- Perform routine safety inspections, act as a safety monitor, and perform onsite and
- remote safety training as needed
- General Knowledge of maintaining an OSHA compliant shop (Hazcom, material labeling,
- fire hazards etc.)
- All other duties as assigned

Physical Demands
- The employee must regularly lift and move up to fifty (50) pounds and occasionally lifts and moves up to eighty (80) pounds.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to extreme weather conditions.
- Employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; places, extreme cold or heat and high noise levels.
- Employee will work in an environment where there is risk that they will be exposed to toxic, caustic and/or hazardous chemicals, fumes, or airborne particles.
- Workers are required to wear personal protective equipment while on the job.
- The work generally requires routine walking, sitting, standing, squatting, climbing, stooping, bending, twisting, reaching, and carrying items.
- An individual will be required to work most hours in a construction shop environment and will need to be able to quickly respond to a change in work demands.
- Perform other functions that may be assigned
Qualifications
- Ability to lift and lower objects up to 80lbs
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Good attention to detail
- Acceptable attendance record
- Acceptable performance evaluations
Must have a minimum of a State of Maine Class B Driver’s License. Class A preferred.
- Must have reliable transportation
- Must be cleared to drive NS Giles Vehicles
Hours
Monday thru Friday: 6:00 am to 4:00 pm (hours can vary as needed). (Occasional Saturdays)
- Ability to work additional hours and/or overtime depending on job needs.
