    Job Description

    The PROFESSIONAL SERVICES team empowers Shopify merchants by building incredible D2C experiences. Think custom headless commerce builds and apps, creative tools that drive commerce like Shopify Launchpad, and more. 

    Software Engineering Managers for Professional Services lead and coach Developers to become better technical contributors, communicators, and leaders. They identify strategic platform projects for their team, and roadmap them accordingly while effectively balancing shipping and maintaining a high quality bar. At Shopify, Software Engineering Managers are responsible for growing a diverse team and cultivating an environment of inclusivity and belonging. 

    Software Engineering Managers are experts in their technology stack and are passionate about their technical craft. During the interview process you can anticipate showing off your coding and architectural skills.

    YOU WORK ON THINGS LIKE:

    • Manage a team and help them prioritize, build, and ship the most impactful features to our merchants and community of developers
    • Work on problems with your team, roll up your sleeves, form an opinion and advocate for engineering-specific roadmap items
    • Work with product, UX and other disciplines and teams to discover the best solutions for our merchants
    • Build your team through internal development and external hiring
    • Improve yourself as a leader by learning with and from other leaders across Shopify, Shopify's internal leadership development pathways, and through your own self-directed learning
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS THAT ARE IMPORTANT FOR SUCCESS IN THIS ROLE:

    • Proven technical leadership skills using modern technologies and frameworks 
    • A strong technical foundation in Backend, Front End, Mobile or UX Development. You feel comfortable diving into the code and interacting with developers at all levels of seniority, and you’re open to working across the stack 
    • Experience designing and developing APIs
    • Familiarity with distributed and highly available systems at scale
    • Experience managing people is a must
    • Proven leadership skills. Your management skills and technical depth allows you to develop and mentor others as well as build credibility with your team while executing broader engineering strategies
    • Comfort working with senior stakeholders (Director level and up), both technical and non technical
    • You have successfully built and grown large teams of engineers during your career
    • A commitment and drive for quality, technical excellence, and results

    BONUS POINTS:

    • Domain experience in eCommerce, shipping & logistics, or financial services is ideal but not necessary for versatile engineering leaders who are strong in their craft
    • ​​​​​​​Experience working directly with customers on project requirements
    • You have experience building your own app(s) on platforms like Shopify.
