DESCRIPTION/JOB SUMMARY
The Knowledge Management Lawyer (KML) will work with the Senior Knowledge Management Lawyer for the Investment Funds practice group in implementing the Group's knowledge initiatives. This includes (i) creation of, and oversight with respect to, terms summaries, issues lists and other data compilations and (ii) the collation of precedent, research materials, standard forms and model documents.
This role includes involvement with business development by preparing substantive materials as part of seeking new business. This role will also be involved in monitoring legal and market developments and trends in the law or business environment that impact the Group's practice.
Additionally, the KML will be involved in providing legal and practical expertise to the Group's practice, both directly and through the training and mentoring of junior associates.
RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES
KNOWLEDGE STRATEGY
- Work with the Senior Knowledge Management Lawyer - Investment Funds to coordinate with the Knowledge Department and practice group attorneys to develop and implement solutions and best practices to increase efficiency in the practice group
- Work with the Senior Knowledge Management Lawyer - Investment Funds in reporting to practice group leadership and the practice group Knowledge Management committee on practice group KM initiatives
KNOWLEDGE BANK & MATTER MANAGEMENT
- Work with matter teams to make sure terms summaries are done accurately on a timely basis. Create summaries for funds not done by the Firm where we have access to the final documents through our and related practices
- Identify, collect and organize work product for the practice group in the relevant Knowledge database, ensuring content is readily accessible on the Firm's intranet and other content sharing platforms
- Assist with capturing matter descriptions and categorizations in the matter profiling system and work with practicing lawyers to ensure full matter profiles are updated to reflect the work conducted
- Assist with the process for producing closing binders and collecting valuable precedent information, periodically review transaction information, highlight trends and make recommendations for template form changes, refined due diligence focal points and negotiating positions
- Create, develop and maintain forms, precedents, checklists, data points, and other substantive content for the practice group; ensuring such content is continuously up-to-date and accurately recorded
THOUGHT LEADERSHIP
- Monitor and inform the practice group of important legal and market developments; support the writing and publication of external client alerts on such developments as needed
- Assist in identifying issues and developments of relevance to key clients
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
- Assist and coordinate with business development on preparation of pitch books, legal 'hot topics' and other relevant materials for business development purposes in various formats
- Coordinate requests between partners and business development in compiling research on new product strategies and issues, as well as existing or prospective clients
- Assist in implementing protocols for client required compliance or preferences and ensure the client specific information is disseminated to associates
TRAINING & MENTORSHIP
- Work with the Firm's training personnel and Professional Development regarding practice-related training needs of the Group: assist in developing Group training, materials, workshop sessions, seminars, and various CLE programs targeted toward junior associates
- Assist associates with locating practice-related knowledge resources and documents
- Act as a source of legal, market, and practical expertise for members of the Group
- Work with the Practice Innovation team and legal project management with respect to opportunities to enhance the delivery of legal services within the practice group, and assist in the evaluation and piloting of legal technology, including document, expert systems, artificial intelligence applications and client-facing applications
COLLABORATION
- Collaborate with other KMLs in the Firm and attend Knowledge Department meetings to facilitate the sharing of best practices and knowledge
- Coordinate with other support groups and departments of the Firm, i.e. Business Development and others, to improve content, procedures and communications to stream-line processes and satisfy various departmental needs
OTHER
- Provide other knowledge support to the Group as may be assigned by the practice group Head, Chief Knowledge & Innovation Officer , Knowledge Management Director and the Senior Knowledge Management Lawyer for the Investment Funds practice group.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Minimum of four years of experience in the relevant practice is required
- Extensive knowledge of relevant legal practices and documents
- Outstanding communication, both written and verbal
- Self-starter and highly motivated
- Strong customer service and prompt response time to incoming requests
- Attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to solve problems, both technical issues and situations involving collaboration with attorneys and non-legal staff/departments
- Demonstrates good business judgment and analytical skills
