  • Responsibilities

    The Experiential Therapist Supervisor provides leadership to other experiential therapists with oversight responsibilities in collaboration with the Manager/Director. This position works with respective program managers and directors to assist with overseeing programming, activities, and other related services to meet patient/resident therapeutic, physical, emotional and spiritual needs. The position also performs duties as an experiential therapist by developing and conducting individual and group therapy for program patients/residents.

     

     

     

    Coordinates, evaluates, supervises student interns. Has knowledge, skills and abilities in a wide variety of expressive media. The Experiential Therapist Supervisor has a thorough working knowledge of psychosocial functioning of patient/resident groups, as well as application of expressive activities within a psychiatric setting. These include, but are not limited to, adventure-based and environmental activities, sports, dance, group initiatives, arts/crafts, music, outdoor activities, art media, psychodrama, ropes and challenge course.

     

     

     

    JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

     

    Supervisory duties to include:

    • Oversight of all Experiential Therapist (ET)staff and maintaining staffing levels to grid.
    • Ensure all shifts are staffed and can accommodate capacity of program and accurate documentation occurs through the payroll process including but not limited to approving timecards.
    • Participate in recruitment activities including but not limited to posting positions, hiring, and onboarding new staff.
    • Complete introductory, mid-point, and annual performance appraisals.
    • Ensure patients/residents are attending groups and if absent, make sure documentation has been entered into EMR.
    • Coordinate or provide ET training, including but not limited to assignment of new employee with preceptor, ensure accurate completion of Job Specific Checklist (JSC), secure coverage and attendance at didactic training/shadowing, on-the-job coaching, and participation in the disciplinary process with supervisor.
    • Other duties as assigned.

     

     

    Communicate with the program manager/director, physician and staff members.

    • Report verbally and/or in writing pertinent information to physician and the treatment team as necessary and discern situations requiring immediate attention versus postponement.
    • Communicate as necessary with the program manager/director and other treatment team members regarding the patient’s/residents’ treatment and care, both verbally and in writing.

     

     

     

    Perform duties in a professional manner.

    • Begin shift on time and be prepared for work responsibilities.
    • Maintain a professional appearance, adhering to the hospital’s dress code.
    • Maintain patient/resident confidentiality.
    • Follow all guidelines as directed by the Rogers Behavioral Health Human Resources policies and procedures for code of conduct while on the job.
    • Attempt to resolve individual issues with peers and supervisees in a positive, calm manner with a focus on solution.
    • Communicate in a respectful and assertive manner to patients/residents, treatment team members and other hospital personnel.
    • Maintain appropriate boundaries with residents.
    • Provide training to staff and community resources
    • Participate in new staff orientation.
    • Participate in outside marketing activities as directed by the program manager/director.
    • Provide education in-services to staff as directed by the program manager/director.
    • Involve self in the overall marketing and customer service plan.

     

     

    Conduct self in a professional manner.

    • Assure daily operation of the department, compliance with Rogers Memorial Hospital’s policies and procedures, and facilitate communication with staff at that site and with the manager/director of the department.
    • Provide effective communication and leadership to staff on site assigned, and facilitate communication to/from the department manager/director.
    • Develop supportive, collaborative relationships with all disciplines to promote a positive, team-oriented approach to care.
    • Provide leadership and role-modeling, incorporating group dynamics into the process.
    • Communicate with individuals on a professional level.
    • Attempt to resolve individual issues with peers in a positive, calm manner, with a focus on solution; demonstrate a courteous, respectful demeanor.
    • Identify concerns and provide input for resolution.
    • Create and maintain a professional network of peers.
    • Display a professional image (attire, grooming, presentation).
    • Attend managers’ meeting at assigned site.

     

     

    Participate in the Rogers Operating System (ROS) Program.

    • Develop an understanding of the ROS process.
    • Apply the ROS model to department functions.
    • Identify ROS concerns throughout Rogers Behavioral Health.
    • Educate and inform Rogers Behavioral Health employees to the Experiential Therapy ROS plans.
    • Aid in the development and participate in ROS monitoring services.

     

     

    Assist in the hiring, training and education of new employees.

    • Attend applicant interviews, as requested by the manager/director.
    • Assist in educating staff in theory and philosophy of Experiential Therapy.
    • Assist the Experiential Therapy manager/director in assessing each applicant.
    • Train staff, as requested, on patient/resident care.
    • Visit other Rogers Behavioral Health programs to assist with supervision of experiential therapists.

     

     

    Demonstrate an understanding of JCAHO and other regulatory agency compliance guidelines.

    • Involve self in the learning and application of standards relevant to the Experiential Therapy department.
    • Attend informational meetings to increase awareness of regulations.

     

     

    Programming.

    • Remain available for immediate problem-solving, such as sudden changes in programming for the day, or need for changes in staffing levels.
    • Conduct experiential therapy, as scheduled.
    • Evaluate, plan and coordinate programming to meet patients’/residents’ needs.
    • Maintain the supplies of the Experiential Therapy department.
    • Be flexible with work assignments, including schedule changes and program additions.
    • Be able to complete job responsibilities with minimal supervision, and complete the activities assigned by the manager/director.
    • Have a good working knowledge of a variety of expressive therapies.
    • Demonstrate a willingness to perform any/all duties within the capacity of one’s job and/or professional credentials.

     

     

    Documentation/Treatment.

    • Complete a treatment plan and evaluation according to Experiential Therapy policy.
    • Complete progress notes according to Experiential Therapy policy.
    • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to collect and review information regarding the patient’s/resident’s status in order to identify age-specific needs. Provide interventions that are appropriate to the developmental age of the patient/resident population served.
    • Participate as a team member in contributing to the development of a treatment plan assessing patient/resident needs; review information regarding the patient’s status in order to identify age-specific needs; and provide interventions that are appropriate to the age of the patient/resident population served.

     

     

    Patient/Resident knowledge.

    • Assure standards of care are maintained for all patients/residents as described in department standards or job descriptions, in order to assure the same level of care at all sites on the Rogers Behavioral Health campus.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of intervention strategies and utilize redirection when necessary to maintain patients’/residents’ safety.
    • Monitor patient/resident behavior and safely intervene appropriately, using de-escalation techniques and least-restrictive measures possible.
    • Establish a therapeutic rapport with patient/resident groups, while maintaining appropriate, professional relationships.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of psychosocial functioning of each patient/resident group. Know the common diagnostic categories and their relationship to patients’/residents’ behavior within the setting. Demonstrate knowledge of treatment procedures/models (behavioral, recovery, etc.) and application within a therapy setting.

     

     

    Student interns.

    • Performs duties pertaining to student recruitment, marketing Rogers Behavioral Health’s internship program.
    • Work with the Human Resources department, utilizing their knowledge and resources.
    • Provide student intern supervision in conjunction with the manager/director and the university.
    • The Experiential Therapist Supervisor, is required to develop and review policies and procedures for the student intern program with the manager/director.

     

     

      

    Staff requirements.

    • Assure that time sheets are verified and forwarded to the manager/director for approval.
    • Oversee daily schedule and facilitate substitute staff as needed for replacement coverage. Refer problematic staffing needs to the manager/director.
    • Serve in an oversight capacity to assure that competencies are completed as prescribed by the department manager/director.
    • Comply with the Safety, Infection Control, and Employee Health programs.
    • Follow the Hospital, Human Resources and Experiential Therapy policies and procedures.
    • Attend all mandatory inservices and other inservices relevant to the position. Be responsible for all educational requirements and related obligations pertaining to the license of the program/unit license/regulatory requirements governing the program(s).
    • Complete all required orientation competencies and training with the Experiential Therapy department and System-wide.
    • Attend Experiential Therapy department and program staff meetings, as required.
    • Meet with the manager/director monthly regarding clinical guidance, training, program evaluation and problem reporting.
    • Be available to serve as manager/director in the absence of the manager/director.
    • Conduct program-specific programming off Hospital grounds, following procedures for using Hospital vehicles.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the manager/director. Be available to facilitate department meetings. Meet with the manager/director once or twice monthly to assure clarity of communication
    • Present to new employee orientation as needed.

     

     

     

    PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:

    • Position requires walking, sitting and standing. Lifting is minimal; must be capable of lifting a minimum of ten (10) pounds. Reaching, handling, grasping and manual dexterity are necessary to operate various equipment.
    • Verbal and hearing ability required to interact with patients/residents and employees. Numerical ability required to maintain records and operate a computer.
    • Tact is required to interact effectively with employees and professional staff. Logical thinking and discretion required to make decisions in initiating and implementing policies and procedures and standards.
    • Must be able to read and communicate through written, verbal and auditory skills and abilities.
    • Position will involve exposure to aggressive/combative patients.6.Be physically/mentally able to perform job duties as verified by a physical exam by a licensed physician, according to post-employment physical.

    Required Skills Required Experience EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

    1. Bachelor’s Science/Bachelor’s Arts degree is required, preferably in recreation, art, music, dance, psychodrama, or other expressive therapies. A Master’s degree in these areas is preferred.

    2. Certification/registration through the appropriate credentialing board required.

    3. Minimum of four years’ experience in group facilitation in a behavioral health setting required.

    4. Supervisory experience with student interns preferred.

    5. Valid driver’s license.

    6. American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR certification or American Red Cross Professional Rescue is required within 30 days of the date of hire, with annual re-certification.

    7. Formal training in management of the aggressive patient is required within 60 days of the date of hire, with annual re-certification, including self-defense training.

    8. Ropes and Challenge Course training by Rogers Behavioral Health, with yearly renewal (where applicable to the position) preferred.

    9. Employees at the Child/Adolescent Day Treatment programs licensed under HFS § 40, are required to have at least one 1) year of educational or work experience serving children with mental health disorders.
