    JOB SUMMARY: Plans, coordinates, and oversees care for patients of any age in PACU department. Provides care within nursing standards of practice and the policies of the Center. Makes decisions regarding direct patient care needs and communicates appropriate information to other team members. May have additional responsibilities as designated by the manager, which include, but are not limited to, serving on committees, participating in quality improvement audits, and projects.

    REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports to the PACU Manager

     

    Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

    • Knows and adheres to policies of the Center and demonstrates fiscal responsibility.

    • Displays initiative and enthusiasm in performing the responsibilities of the position.

    • Assumes responsibilities for own actions.

    • Seeks help as needed and knows limitations.

    • Must be able to meet deadlines and schedules.

    • Must follow and meet organizations dress code, be neat and well groomed.

    • Must be willing to share knowledge and communicate effectively and to assist in training.

    • Follows policies, procedures, goals, and objectives for perioperative nursing care according to accepted standards.

    • Plans, implements, and evaluates pre and post operative nursing care for patients based on individual, specific patient needs, and according to physician’s orders.

    • Must have adequate understanding of operative procedures and the postoperative course.

    • Organizes and prepares medical records of patients. Documents care appropriately and fully. Follows up on missing data and other patient care needs.

    • Maintains and demonstrates current skills and knowledge of intravenous therapy, medication administration and effects, patient assessment, airway maintenance, patient teaching, emotional/social support of patients and families, and other needed clinical competencies.

    • Remains calm and functions as a team member during times of stress and crisis situations.

    • Must display initiative, flexibility, cooperation and adaptability in his/her career approach.

    • Must be able to maintain a poised, pleasant and professional manner even in the face of adversity.

    • Seeks involvement in activities that promote professional growth and behavior.

    • Actively participates in appropriate committee and QAPI activities.

    • Follows OSHA and other standards for protection against blood borne pathogens.

    • Uses good body mechanics.

    • Informs PACU Manager of applicable day-to-day situations.

    • Follows employee health and other personnel and staffing policies.

    • Prepares the area for patients

    • Washes hands upon arrival to unit.

    • Checks emergency equipment.

    • Stocks and restocks area with supplies.

    • Identifies items needing to be reordered or procured.

    • Keeps area neat, clean and patient ready.

    • Keeps supervisor, surgeon and anesthesiologist informed of patient’s needs and progress.

    • Plans for patient care

    • Receives patient from surgery and evaluates needs of patient, administering care accordingly. Compares stability of vital signs with pre-op to establish parameters.

    • Assesses and documents patient status. Evaluates nursing goals, care plan and outcomes.

    • Must possess skills in airway management in adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.

    • Must demonstrate ongoing assessment of pain and pain management.

    • Understands policies in signing out controlled substances.

    • Possesses knowledge of signs and symptoms of malignant hyperthermia.

    • Understands the importance of preparing the patient and his/her care giver for home care according to the age group of the patient.

    • Makes post operative phone calls the following post op day and assists patient with any problems.

    • Assures patient safety

    • Does not leave patient unattended while in Phase I Recovery Phase.

    • Administers medications as ordered by the anesthesiologist.

    • Establish nursing goals based on nursing diagnosis and evaluates outcome.

    • Explains safety issues in ambulating when patient goes home.

    • Practices safety measures in drug administration and in equipment use.

    • Assures continuity of care

    • Takes and gives patient report to relieve nurses.

     

     

     

    a. Reviews patient record for previously documented information.

     

     

    • Environmental responsibilities

    • Controls room temperature.

    • Provides warming devices when needed.

    • Understands the cause of hypothermia.

    • Infection control

    • Knows universal standard precautions and must use them in caring for the patient.

    • Must follow procedures in terminal cleaning of units.

     

     

     

     

    QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate of an approved school of nursing. Currently licensed in the state. CPR required, advanced life support certification required. One year experience required intra-operative setting. Demonstrates clinical competency, leadership, and teaching capabilities. Physically and emotionally capable of performing responsibilities of position.

Demonstrates clinical competency, leadership, and teaching capabilities. Physically and emotionally capable of performing responsibilities of position.

     

    REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

     

    OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: General familiarity with medical terminology as it pertains to anatomy and surgical procedures for an operating room.

     

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Shall be physically able to stand, walk, and maintain varied body motions and positions for long periods of time. Demonstrates manual dexterity.
