    MECHANICAL ENGINEER

    Sion Power, the global leader in the development of a new generation of high-energy, rechargeable lithium batteries for portable power is currently searching for a Mechanical Engineer for its research and development facility in Tucson, Arizona.  Sion’s exciting new technology is based on the elements lithium and sulfur, which when combined, yield a battery system with the highest theoretical gravimetric and volumetric energy densities of any battery couple, and offer significant improvements in performance over current rechargeable batteries.

    POSITION SUMMARY

    In collaboration with the engineering team, this position will design and coordinate installation of required equipment and/or equipment modifications for the development of vacuum deposition, web handling, coating and mixing systems used for the production of Li-S battery cells. Candidate will make recommendations for process development and help direct the design, procurement, fabrication, installation, and process base-lining of all hardware related to the manufacturing process. Duties also include writing specifications for new equipment and participating in the development of general equipment standards.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    ·         Responsible for design, installation and commissioning of new equipment or modified components on existing equipment.

    ·         Modify or improve cell-development and assembly equipment.

    ·         Work with other departments to identify and minimize systemic production problems or bottlenecks.

    ·         Assist in the development of preventive maintenance program for all equipment; develop critical spare parts list.

    ·         Maintain work instruction documents.

    ·         Provide training to operation and maintenance teams.

    ·         Additional duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field required, with at least five (5) years of experience in manufacturing equipment and equipment design. A proficiency in Solidworks is a must.  Experience with web handling, vacuum deposition and/or coating systems is highly desired.

    Language Skills

    Ability to speak and understand English in a manner that is sufficient for effective communication with supervisors, employees, beneficiaries and customers, based on the assumption that such individuals can only speak and understand English.  Ability to present information to small groups also required.

    COMPUTER LITERACy

    The Candidate must be fluent in the use of personal computers for the standard office automation tasks (the windows environment and word processing, spread sheet, electronic mail, project management and presentation software) as well as for a variety of technical applications (CAD, CAD 3D, Solidworks).

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    While performing job duties, the employee will be required to regularly use a PC, telephone, fax machine, copy machine, lift objects, speak, hear, and write. The employee may need to work in a dry room (~ -60 °C Dew Point) for six or more hours a day.  The employee may be required to handle and transport packaged chemicals. Working with potentially hazardous and/or toxic chemicals, with appropriate protective clothing and apparatus, though infrequent, is required.  The employee should be able to lift and move 25 pounds and could be called upon to lift or move up to 50 pounds on occasion.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    While performing the duties of this job, the person will occasionally work near hazardous and/or toxic chemicals, energized electronic equipment, and office machines in both laboratory and office environments.

    TRAVEL

    Occasional travel to vendors may be required.
