BACKGROUND/MISSION
Figure Skating in Harlem (FSH) is the only organization to combine the power of education with the grace and discipline of figure skating to build young leaders. We give girls ages 6-18 access to innovative afterschool and summer programs that advance their intellectual, emotional, and physical health. Our mission is to help girls transform their lives and grow in confidence, leadership, and academic achievement. For more than 27 years, our award-winning programs have provided girls from low-income communities with access to education, health, and wellness services to help them reach their fullest potential. Our vision is for every student, regardless of socio-economic background, to acquire the foundational academic, social, and leadership skills to achieve her dreams. She will be a powerful speaker, an effective leader, live a healthy lifestyle, and be a global citizen. Headquartered in Harlem, we launched our first chapter in 2017, Figure Skating in Detroit.
Job Summary:
Reporting to the Vice President of Education and Leadership Development, the SEL Specialist will play a vital role in promoting the social and emotional development of our students across all age groups. This part-time position primarily involves working during afterschool and evening hours and requires a blend of strategic thinking and hands-on work with students and families, as well as collaboration with the full Figure Skating in Harlem staff to integrate SEL practices effectively. This is an in-person role, based at Figure Skating in Harlem’s Academic Center.
Key Responsibilities:
● SEL Strategy: Develop and implement a comprehensive SEL strategy and group activities that align with FSH's mission and goals, integrating evidence-based practices to support the social and emotional well-being of our students.
● Hands-On Support: Provide direct support to students and families, offering individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and social-emotional skill-building activities both in-person and virtually.
● Collaboration: Work collaboratively with FSH Leadership and the Education team, including the VP of Education and Leadership, Senior Director of College and Career Success, Dean of Students, Teachers, and Tutors, to integrate SEL practices into curriculum and programmatic activities effectively.
● Family Engagement: In collaboration with colleagues, engage with families to provide support, resources, and workshops on topics related to social and emotional development, strengthening the home-school partnership.
● Data Collection and Analysis: Collect data on SEL outcomes through pre- and post-program surveys to determine program effectiveness; analyze results and use findings to inform continuous improvement efforts.
● Professional Development: Stay abreast of the latest research and best practices in SEL, participating in professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills.
Qualifications:
● Master's degree in social work, psychology, or related field; LCSW or LMSW preferred.
● Minimum of 3-5 years of experience working in social work or counseling roles, preferably with youth of all age groups.
● Strong understanding of social-emotional learning principles and evidence-based interventions.
● Excellent communication, interpersonal, and counseling skills, with the ability to establish rapport and build relationships with students and families.
● Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, as well as independently with minimal supervision.
● Flexibility to adapt to the needs of a diverse student population and work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Hourly Rate: $30 - $40
