Position Overview
The Social Media and Digital Specialist executes the university’s day‑to‑day social media presence, creating and publishing content across platforms including copywriting, photography, video, and basic graphic design. The role supports the VP of Marketing and Public Relations by assisting with the execution of digital marketing initiatives and tracking marketing and advertising performance. This position is highly hands‑on and focused on content development, audience engagement, and performance reporting.
Responsibilities
Social Media Execution & Content Creation
Execute the university’s official social media presence across platforms including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, X (Twitter), and LinkedIn.
Curate content and create original posts, including copywriting, photography, graphics, and video, to support university initiatives and campaigns.
Monitor social media channels daily and respond to questions and comments in a timely, brand‑appropriate manner.
Brand Consistency & Account Management
Manage and maintain university‑affiliated social media accounts, ensuring brand standards, voice, and visual identity are consistent across channels.
Collaborate with internal departments to support social media needs and ensure messaging is accurate, timely, and on brand.
Digital Advertising & Campaign Support
Support the VP of Marketing and Public Relations in executing marketing and advertising strategies.
Assist VP in maintaining relationships with current advertising partners and college listing sites, while researching potential new digital advertising opportunities.
Stay informed on market trends and emerging opportunities in digital advertising and social media.
Analytics, Performance Tracking & Optimization
Establish and track key performance indicators for social media performance.
Analyze performance across social and advertising channels and prepare reports to support data‑informed decisions.
Assist leadership in evaluating channel effectiveness and budget allocation based on performance insights.
Collaboration & Student Engagement
Collaborate with department leaders and directors to ensure social media efforts align with institutional priorities.
Recruit, train, and manage a student social ambassador team and student worker to support content creation and campus engagement.
Required Qualifications
Faith Commitment: A strong commitment to the Christian faith and the mission and core values of Nelson University.
Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Digital Media, Business, or a related field
Understanding of content strategy, branding, and audience segmentation
1 - 2 years of professional experience in marketing or digital communications
Demonstrated hands‑on experience managing social media channels for an organization or brand
Strong writing and editing skills with attention to voice, tone, and accuracy
Experience with content creation tools such as Canva and/or Adobe Creative Suite
Experience working with social media management and publishing platforms
Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines in a collaborative environment
Strong communication skills and comfort engaging with diverse audiences
Preferred Qualifications · 3+ years of professional experience in marketing or digital communications
· Experience creating digital content, including graphics, photography, and/or video
· Experience working with content calendars and campaign planning
Familiarity with project management tools such as Asana
Experience managing or supporting interns, student workers, or ambassadors
Familiarity with higher education, nonprofit, or mission‑driven organizations
Experience collaborating with cross‑functional teams (e.g., marketing, admissions, IT)
Schedule
This is an onsite position. Standard work hours are Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; however, this role requires flexibility, including evenings and weekends as needed during major projects, recruitment cycles, and university events. Occasional local and regional travel may be required to support university events and initiatives.
