  • Responsibilities

Our client is seeking a versatile, experienced Software Engineer to serve as the core in-house application engineer for a medical device startup. This role is currently supported through grant funding and is expected to continue for approximately three months. The position is hands-on and highly cross-functional, centered primarily on developing a mobile application for parents and caregivers. The Software Engineer will also collaborate closely with the company's contract firmware partner and should be comfortable navigating both software development responsibilities and, when necessary, firmware-adjacent challenges.

    Responsibilities

    • Design and build the iOS and/or Android parent/caregiver-facing app that pairs with the company's Bluetooth (BLE) hardware device.
    • Pair with and read data from the hardware over BLE, including GATT characteristic pairing and connection/reconnection logic.
    • Implement on-device session timers and adherence calculations and build basic on-device statistics and data visualizations from time-series data.
    • Render progress views from existing Figma hand-off assets (specs, artifacts, component libraries), partnering with the design resource to determine what's feasible for upcoming releases.
    • Build a data export workflow by compiling, formatting, and exporting session data (e.g., CSV) via native mail/share tools (MFMailComposeViewController on iOS, Android Intents/sharing).
    • Maintain a clean architectural separation between the UI layer and the BLE layer, since firmware/hardware will continue to evolve independently.
    • Work closely with the contract firmware team and, over time, help evaluate what firmware capability makes sense to bring in-house.
    • Take the app through the full App Store and/or Google Play release process, including testing and review.
    • Document work to support a Design and Development File (DDF), consistent with medical device development practice.
    • Operate as an independent, singular technical resource in a start-up environment — moving quickly, prototyping, and holding a high bar for testing rigor before release.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
    • 3+ years of experience building and shipping mobile apps end-to-end, including at least one medical product, ideally on both iOS and Android (natively or via a cross-platform framework such as React Native or Flutter); strong candidates with deep expertise in a single platform plus firmware/hardware fluency will also be considered.
    • Solid programming fundamentals in Swift and/or Kotlin (or a cross-platform framework of choice).
    • Hands-on experience with BLE integration: GATT pairing, connection/reconnection handling, and online/buffered data synchronization.
    • Comfort building lightweight on-device statistics and data-visualization logic.
    • Familiarity with IEC 62304 and other relevant medical device standards.
    • A systems-architecture mindset, knows how to keep UI and hardware-communication layers decoupled so each can evolve on its own timeline.
    • Experience taking an app through a full app-store release process (testing, review, staged rollout).
    • A track record of working independently in a small or startup-style team, collaborating closely with designers and other engineers.
    • Breadth across software, hardware, and firmware concepts. Need not be a firmware engineer, but should be conversant enough to work well with the team that is.
    • A pragmatic, fast-moving, detail-oriented approach: quick to prototype, rigorous about testing, comfortable with ambiguity.
    • Experience handling health data, including encryption at rest/in transit/in use, and general awareness of HIPAA or IRB-related constraints, is a plus.
    • Prior experience working alongside a contract hardware/firmware team is a plus.
    • Experience with use-related risk analyses (URRAs) is a plus.
    • Experience with wearable consumer health tech, across hardware and multiple operating systems, is a plus.

    Location

    • Remote (US) or On-site, San Francisco Bay Area, CA

    Employee Type

    • Full-time, Temporary (3 months)
    • Grant funded

    Compensation

    • $150,000 annualized salary equivalent. This position is expected to last approximately three months, resulting in total anticipated earnings of approximately $37,500 during the assignment.
