Waste Management Division
Solid Waste Worker
The City of Norfolk’s Waste Management Division has an immediate need for six (6) temps to perform work as a Solid Waste Worker.
Duties will include:
• Assist City Collection staff with rolling 90-gallon trash containers filled with debris up to the garbage truck to be set on the lifting mechanism and mechanically emptied.
• Assist City Collection staff to manually pick up yard debris that may be tied and bundled or in clear plastic bags not weighing more than 75 pounds or in trash containers not to exceed 13 gallons.
• Assist City Collection staff with manually removing overflow or over-sized items that will not fit inside the trash container. Items typically consist of boxes, chairs, small tables, lawn equipment, bags, cardboard, vacuum, etc.
• Assist driver with cleaning the cab of the garbage truck and washing the exterior after route completion.
• May assist with the assembly and delivery of garbage containers to Norfolk residents and bring the damaged carts back to the Waste Management facility.
• Assist with yard maintenance to include lawn mowing and picking up litter.
• Assist with off-loading deliveries and loading goods onto a tractor trailer to be shipped out.
• Mandatory safety training and review of expectations on Day 1.
• Other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Tuesday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Employees may be released early once the collection route has been completed; however, work will be available if the employee needs guaranteed hours through 3:30 p.m.
