    PIH Health is a nonprofit, regional healthcare network that serves approximately 3 million residents in the Los Angeles County, Orange County and San Gabriel Valley region. The fully integrated network is comprised of PIH Health Hospital - Whittier, PIH Health Hospital - Downey and PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital, 27 outpatient medical locations, a multispecialty medical (physician) group, home healthcare services and hospice care, as well as heart, cancer, women’s health, urgent care and emergency services.

     

    Reporting to one of our department Supervisors or Managers, this position provides spiritual support to patients, their loved ones, and staff in our hospitals. This per-diem chaplain will provide shift coverage in our hospitals in downtown Los Angeles, Whittier, and Downey that will routinely include weekend hours as well as some holidays as needed. This chaplain serves people of all belief systems (religious and non-religious), and provides or arranges special rites and rituals as requested by patients and/or surrogates.

    Required Skills

    • Knowledge of common spiritual, psychosocial, psychological, and bioethical issues related to illness, hospitalization, palliative care, hospice, grief/bereavement, death and dying, including assessing needs quickly in complex situations and ability intervene appropriately to address spiritual distress.

    • Excellent interpersonal and pastoral counseling skills with demonstrated success quickly building rapport, trust, and credibility with patients/families as well as collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary colleagues.

    • Exemplary personal-responsibility and follow-though as demonstrated in prior roles requiring frequent self-direction, effective time management, and appropriate boundary maintenance in both inpatient and outpatient contexts.

    • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English both verbally and in writing.

    • Experience in public speaking/prayers, leading religious services, and designing and delivering training events and education programs

    • Competency with electronic medical documentation software as well as computer software such as Microsoft Office.

     

     

    Required Experience

     

    REQUIRED:

    • Board Certified Chaplain, or in-process of achieving board certification within one year of employment.
    • Evidence of annual continuing education and maintaining standing with accrediting professional association/organization.
    • Experience working in an ecumenical/interfaith environment.
    • Evidence of multi-cultural awareness, humility, and curiosity.

     

    PREFERRED:

    • Strongly preferred bilingual Spanish and English fluency
    • More than five years of experience working in a hospital and/or hospice setting
