ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF DESIGN

POSITION SUMMARY:
The School of Art and Design at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU Carbondale) invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Design tenure track faculty position. The successful applicant will augment faculty expertise in the Communication Design curriculum, the Industrial Design curriculum, the Graduate Design curriculum, and the Design Research Studio. It is anticipated that the successful applicant will begin the appointment on August 16, 2022.
The Design program is housed in 24,000 sq/ft Pulliam Hall Design Wing that includes the Design Research Studio, a fabrication lab consisting of 3D printers, a laser cutter, vinyl cutter, and other fabrication equipment, and a complete wood and metal shop. All classes are taught in wi-fi equipped classrooms supporting integration of hand and computer skills. The Design program currently has 50 students enrolled in its two specializations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Conduct ongoing peer reviewed creative research as appropriate for a design faculty member at a Carnegie High Research Activity institution.
2. Teach undergraduate and graduate level design courses.
3. Provide service within a design team environment: by participating in course development, program planning, assisting in advising, and recruiting and retention activities.
4. Participate in the School, University, community, and professional service.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must have a terminal degree in a design-related discipline. e.g., MFA in Graphic Design, Master in Design Engineering (MDe), Ph.D. in Design, Interactive Design, Web Development/Design, or closely related field by time of hire.
Candidates holding a bachelor’s degree in a design discipline and at least 5 years professional tested experience outside of the classroom in real-world situations relevant to the discipline in which the faculty member would be teaching may be considered. Peer-reviewed activities include, but are not limited to, awards, award of competitive contracts/work, certifications, grants, publications, and workshops.
This position requires the understanding and ability to teach both 2/d and 3/d design, and a demonstrated interest in collaborative design work between graphic design, industrial design and business.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
· Experience developing future-related design approaches such as XR including AR/VR/MR and product design.
· College level teaching above a graduate appointment.
· Documented Design Research working with or focused on underrepresented/marginalized communities.

The School of Art and Design (SoAD) has 21 faculty members, approximately 140 undergraduate majors, 35 graduate students and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). SoAD offers: a BFA degree in Art with specializations in Art Education, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, Glass, Metalsmithing, Industrial Design, and Communication Design; a BA degree in Art with specializations in Art Education, Art History, General Studio, Photography; a MFA degree with specializations in Design, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, Glass, and Metalsmithing; and a graduate certificate in Art History.
The College of Arts and Media houses six schools: Architecture; Art and Design; Journalism; Media Arts; Music; Theater & Dance. The breadth of programs offered in the college provides a rich environment for interdisciplinary collaborative research. Ideal candidates will have traditional and contemporary experience in graphic design; with knowledge in at least one area: app development, web design, digital media, interactive design, and or UX/UI.
