Position Summary

Southern Land Company, a national real estate development and construction firm headquartered in Nashville, TN is seeking a full-time Staff Accountant to join our dynamic team.

We are seeking a highly motivated, talented Staff Accountant to join our energetic and dynamic accounting team. The successful candidate will be able to work independently, in a fast-paced work environment.

Primary Responsibilities

• Responsible for review and preparation of all Single Family Partnership and Homebuilding entries needed to report cash, revenues and costs, as well as generating reports and managing accounting functions, as needed, to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
• Review and record wire transfers.
• Record cash receipt entries.
• Prepare house closing journal entries.
• Assist with month-end close process, including revenue, inventory, margin, COS, WIP and journal entries.
• General ledger / balance sheet research reconciliations.
• Record monthly construction draw process for multiple entities.
• Maintain accurate reporting on lot closings and variance reports for Single Family Partnerships.
• Maintain accurate reporting on sales, starts and closings dates and relevant homebuilding information.
• Prepare monthly interest payments for multiple entities.
• Prepare and submit required weekly / monthly / quarterly reporting to Corporate.
• Maintain sound accounting methods and systems in accordance with corporate policies and procedures.
• Participate in projects assigned by Corporate, Division Presidents, and Controller, including ad-hoc reports as required.
• Accounts Payable support.
• Assist with year-end audits and tax returns.
• Assist with property taxes.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and intermediate Excel skills
• Ability to keep sensitive information highly confidential.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to deal professionally with clients, vendors, and co-workers on the phone and in person.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills, ability to take initiative, use good judgment, demonstrate a strong sense of urgency and attention to detail, and carry multiple projects through to completion.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize work and ask for further clarification when necessary.
• Ability to work with tight time constraints, as well as the ability to deal with frequent interruptions, unresolved situations, frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.

Required Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting
• 1 – 3 years Accounting experience
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, accrual basis accounting, and financial reporting
• Experience using a larger ERP / accounting system
• Excellent attention to detail
• Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines
• Excellent communication, analytical and writing skills
