    POSITION SUMMARY

     

    This is a leadership position requiring technical acumen but primarily managing, coordinating, and in some cases leading the design on energy projects performed in the business unit. The Managing Principal Engineer will take full responsibility for the design product from concept thru to execution and commissioning. Initially it is expected that all design resources will be provided thru both the internal Engineering & Construction divisions and thru external consultants without the need for dedicated support, however this will be evaluated over time.

     

     

    WHAT YOU’LL DO:

     

    • Design project management and oversight.
    • Business Development and sales support.
    • Project design budgeting and workflow planning for all disciplines.
    • Engineering/Energy consulting project pursuits.
    • Training, industry organization participation, leadership meetings.

     

    This individual is responsible for the oversight, supervision, management, workflow and design product in the EnergyDivision.

     

    Directly responsible for the following disciplines and design product:

    • HVAC Design 

    • Architecture

    • Plumbing Design

    • Civil

    • Electrical Design

    • Structural

    • Building Controls and Integration

    • BIM (Technology and Documentation)

    • Process DesignConstructability (Coordination and

    • Fire Protection Design Detailing)

    • Specialty Design

    • Coordinate and oversee all design work performed by both Southland resources (internal) and

    • consultants (external).

    • Coordinate with the Engineering & Construction Principal Engineers to assign project teams and

    • supporting resources on specific projects where the decision is made to utilize internal engineering (MEPF).

    • Develop requests for proposal and coordinate scope of work with consultants when using external

    • architecture and engineering firms.

    • Prequalify AE firms and maintain a database of firms on a national basis.

    • Assist with the development of business plans, cost budgets, workflow planning and scheduling with

    • respect to design within the Energy Division.

    • Support business development and marketing activities as directed.

    • Participate and represent engineering in consulting sales opportunities.

    • Participate in the conceptual design effort on large and significant projects.

    • Quality control of the design product.

    • Coordinate/support project RFI’s, field changes, and other engineering related items questions during

    • construction.

    • Drive innovation at all levels of a project.

    • Participate in the Energy Division leadership team meetings.

    • Participate in the Southland Engineering Leadership meetings.

    • Provide design engineering training.

    • Coordinate with the Energy Engineering and Project Development group.

    • Attend and participate in applicable industry conferences and seminars.

    • While this position will not have any direct reports at this time, supervision and mentoring of engineers will be a requirement.

     

     

    WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL:

    • Must be an expert people leader, this means possessing senior level management skills and strong interpersonal and communication skills to become a collaborative persuasive leader of people and help develop favorable customer relationships.
    • Expereince with Design Build/Design Assist in the Construction Industry - Must understand the fundamental concepts and practical application of design build/design assist engineering.
    • Must be able to lead and influence the technical design solutions on prospective projects.
    • Ability to guide design teams towards cost effective solutions that maximize client value.
    • Experience as a working manager- the position is that of an engineering leader providing leadership and direction to project teams. This position is also expected to perform engineering tasks like a Senior Engineer, i.e. as an individual contributor.
    • Experience in engineering leadership, innovative design, preconstruction sales, and business development.
    • Willingness and ability to partake in out of State travel to Customer presentations, project sites and AE offices.

     

     

     

    WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE:

    Education and/or Equivalent Experience - Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or University in

    mechanical, electrical or architectural engineering.

    Hold a Professional Engineer license in good standing.

    A minimum of 10-15 years of engineering design and management.

    Must have an excellent working knowledge of Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and Fire Protection

    (MEPF) design and a working knowledge of Civil, Structural and Architectural (CSA).

    • Research labs.

    Desired Systems and Software Expertise:

    • Familiar with AutoCAD, Revit or similar design software applications.
    • Experience with equivalent Trane Trace calculation and energy modeling software.
    • Proficient knowledge in use of MS Excel, power point, project and word.

    Desired Certifications:

    • LEED AP
    • CEM (Certified Energy Manager)

    Desired Industry participation:

    • ASHRAE
    • ASHE
    • ASPE
    • AEE
