    POSITION DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:

     

    The Detailing Manager – MEP (Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing) is responsible for providing the leadership and guidance necessary to manage Southland’s design and construction projects through the design process from concept through spooling. This role provides support and knowledge to the detailers on technical and non-technical issues to maximize efforts. The Detailing Manager will be accountable for implementing Southland’s vision of the Southland Workflow from concept through fabrication, supporting the business development and preconstruction teams with constructability/coordination budgets, and managing AutoCAD and Revit databases.

     

    WHAT YOU’LL DO:

     

    • Provide ownership and leadership of detailing within the division
    • You’ll establish, document and enforce department standards; keeping current of industry standards, best practices, etc.
    • Participate and lead in conceptual design efforts to promote modular construction, prefabrication, streamlined layouts and management of project construction and constructability standards; Single point of accountability for Constructability on assigned project.
    • Develop realistic deliverables, timelines, and measures of success; determines and allocates resources; communicates progress with key stakeholders
    • Contribute/Develop a design pull schedule to direct the model development to meet the project field deliverables such as: Spooling & Fabrication Drawings, Installation Drawings, Wall & Sleeve Penetration Drawings, Hanger Drawings, Seismic Drawings, Total Station Points Export, Bill of Materials, Material Take-offs
    • Provide a solid and stable foundation of hardware and software platforms to enable maximum detailer efficiency
    • Oversee and direct the model development (Revit) to ensure constructability goals are being met throughout the design process.
    • Interact with Pre-Construction, Engineering, Construction, Project Management and Shop departments to provide an integrated detailing effort
    • Provide detailing budgets for estimates
    • Forecast detailer demand and recruit/train accordingly
    • Manage detailer production to budgets and provide progress and “estimate to complete” reports
    • Identify and implement QC process on projects
    • Identify and implement training and personnel development plan
    • Hold detailer meetings on a regular basis to communicate objectives and solicit feedback
    • Provide status reports on resources, budgets, technology, and IT issues to management team
    • Assist with marketing/sales presentations
    • Participate in project/potential project meetings to establish project BIM- CAD deliverables and schedules
    • Attend seminars and industry function events as required
    • Prepare and present presentations to customer/industry partners on SI programs and capabilities

     

    WHAT YOU BRING TO US:

     

    • Knowledgeable of the design and coordination process and the appropriate timing to input constructability guidance.
    • Strong computer experience and software knowledge of Revit and Navisworks
    • A strong desire and ability to learn how to read, analyze and interpret construction periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, Architectural, Structural. Electrical & Mechanical drawings. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
    • Fabrication/Shop Knowledge
    • Constructability Knowledge
    • Financial Acumen
    • Keen knowledge of Union Rules
    • The ability to oversee all 3 trades (sheet metal, plumbing and piping) equally and can seek out supplemental trade expertise to support the project team as needed.
    • Strong Quality Control experience
    • Good resource planning skills
    • Strong communication skills with both internally and with external project team members (architect, engineers, general contractor, trade subcontractors, etc.).
    • The ability to interpret the project Construction Schedule to integrate a Design Pull Schedule for the completion of the project BIM model to meet those objectives.
    • You can lead the final trade coordination and sign-off process as well as schedule and oversee the project spooling resources to meet project schedule.
    • You’re organized and able to lead the constructability effort on multiple projects, or direct a constructability team on larger projects.

     

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

     

    • Degree from a four-year college is preferred or Trade school or equivalent combination of technical training AND/OR related experience. Past experience in similar Mechanical construction detailing and/or related functions. The desire to learn detailing strategies and techniques and how they would support division objectives.
    • 10+ years in trade management and managing profitable projects with proven ability to improve margin on the division projects.
