University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) Special Care Unit - UAB Special Care Unit is an elite team of acute care professionals who treat catastrophically ill, medically complex patients requiring extended acute care. Most patients are ventilator dependent with multiple co-morbidities.
We are looking for a full time Speech Therapist (ST) to join our Special Care Unit Multidisciplinary Team. The ST is responsible for various patient care activities including:
Performance of bedside swallow assessments and Modified Barium Swallow studies, and analysis of results to form therapeutic goals based on the evaluation
Appropriately document evaluations, clinical findings, and progress summaries in the clinical record
Report to the physician the patient’s reaction to treatment and any changes in the patient’s condition, or when there are deviations from the plan of care
Responsible for creating speech therapy treatment plans, and furnishing services in accordance with hospital policies
Guide patients and caregivers in appropriate therapeutic interventions to improve speech, language, and swallowing dysfunction
Instruct/educate the patient, caregivers and other health team members on plan of care and therapeutic procedures
Attend and participate in multidisciplinary care planning activities

Required experience:
Current CCC-SLP (Certificate of Clinical Competence as Speech Language Pathologist)
2 or more years in an acute care hospital setting
BLS certification required
Licensure - Current State of Alabama Speech Therapist License
