Location: **** Benhaven Academy, Wallingford
Salary Range: Exempt, commensurate with years certified and education
Schedule: Monday-Friday. 37.5 hours per week
Purpose of Position:
This is a full-time, 37.5-hour per week, exempt position. The Special Education Teacher works under the direction of the School Director. The Special Education Teacher, collaborating with the team, develops the IEP and provides specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students.

Roles and Responsibilities:
Learning Environment, Engagement, And Commitment To Learning:
Promote student/adult learner engagement, independence, and interdependence in learning and facilitate a positive learning community by:
- Promoting a positive learning environment that is respectful and equitable.
- Promoting developmentally appropriate standards of behavior that support a productive learning environment.
- Maximizing service delivery by effectively managing routines and transitions.
Planning For Active Learning:
Design academic, social/behavioral, therapeutic, crisis, or consultative plans to engage students/adult learners in rigorous and relevant learning and to promote their curiosity about the world at large by:
- Developing plans aligned with standards that build on learners’ knowledge and skills and provide an appropriate level of challenge.
- Developing plans to actively engage learners in content.
- Selecting appropriate assessment strategies to identify and plan learning targets.
- Participating in the development of an IEP as a member of a student’s IEP team.

Service Delivery:
Implement academic, social/behavioral, therapeutic, crisis, or consultative plans to engage student/adult learners in rigorous and relevant learning and to promote their curiosity about the world at large by:
- Implementing service delivery for students as specified in the IEP.
- Leading student/adult learners to construct meaning and apply new learning through the use of a variety of differentiated and evidence-based learning strategies.
- Assessing learning, providing feedback, and adjusting service delivery.
Professional Responsibility and Teacher Leadership:
Maximize support for learning by developing and demonstrating professionalism, collaboration, and leadership by:
- Engaging in continuous professional learning to enhance service delivery and improve student/adult learning.
- Collaborating to develop and sustain a professional learning environment to support student/adult learning.
- Working with colleagues, students, and families to develop and sustain a positive school climate that support student/adult learning.
License/Certifications
- Minimum of bachelor’s degree and Connecticut Certification as a Special Educator preferred OR Durational Shortage Area Permit (DSAP) eligible. (*If you are not sure if you meet this requirement, please reach out, and we will discuss).
Experience and Skill Requirements:
- Must pass a variety of background checks
- Knowledge of special education curriculum and I.E.P. development (support will be provided)
- Experience working with children and adolescents in a special education environment
- Experience working with persons with autism
- Strong belief in positive behavioral supports and healthy boundaries
- Knowledge of Special Education teacher requirements in CT
