  • Responsibilities

    POSITION/JOB SUMMARY:

    • Provides speech therapy services, which include patient evaluation, treatment, and documentation for patients at JMHS. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults.

    This position will work 10-20 hours per biweekly pay period, 2-3 days per week.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Evaluation and treatment of Speech disorders that include dysfluency, dysphonia, and motor speech disorders, dysarthria and apraxia.

    • Language disorders such as when a person has trouble understanding others (receptive language), or sharing thoughts, ideas, and feelings (expressive language).

    • Social communication disorders such as when a person has trouble with the social use of verbal and nonverbal communication. These disorders may include problems (a) communicating for social purposes (e.g., greeting, commenting, asking questions), (b) talking in different ways to suit the listener and setting, and (c) following rules for conversation and story-telling.

    • Cognitive-communication disorders include problems organizing thoughts, paying attention, remembering, planning, and/or problem-solving. These disorders usually happen as a result of a stroke, traumatic brain injury, or dementia, although they can be congenital.

    • Swallowing disorders (dysphagia) are feeding and swallowing difficulties, which may follow an illness, surgery, stroke, or injury.

    • Consults with other members of the rehabilitation team to select the most appropriate activity program consistent with needs and capabilities of each patient and to coordinate ST with other therapeutic activities.

    • Assures quality patient care through proper utilization of staff, equipment, and programs offered through JMHS

    • Completes paperwork promptly to meet budgetary guidelines, ensure prompt and efficient handling of the medical record and comply with all state, federal, and departmental guidelines.

    • Assures continued professional development through attendance at continuing education and professional conferences per MN state guidelines for Speech Therapy.

    • Adherence to hospital/departmental/school infection control guidelines.

    • Conducts educational programs or participates in educating nursing and other staff in ST techniques and objectives.

    • Communicates effectively with physicians and other referral sources

    • Assists with program development, marketing, and other duties as assigned.

    • Continuous quality improvement.

    • Help others succeed.

    • Other duties as assigned.

      • Follow up as appropriate with supervisor, co-workers, patients, or residents regarding reported complaints, problems, and/or concerns.
      • Promotes positive public relations with patients, residents, family members and guests.
      • Completes requirements for in-service and annual training, acceptable attendance, uniform dress codes including personal hygiene, and other work duties as assigned.

    ** QUALIFICATIONS**

    • Education: Minimum of a Master’s degree from an accredited school of Speech Therapy.
    • Licensure/Registration: State licensure or registration per MN State Guidelines.
    • Experience in multiple treatment settings is preferred.
    • CPR certification
