Sports Reference LLC (parent company of Baseball-Reference.com, Basketball-Reference.com, The Immaculate Grid and several other sites) is a well-established, rapidly growing company at the intersection of sports and technology. As our team has grown the amount of administrative and management work has grown at a fast pace, so we are looking for a high-potential, self-directed individual to support the Executive Team and company.

    The ideal candidate will be looking to begin a career in management. This role will provide an introduction to both sports and data-related businesses. You will be in the room following along (and in some cases contributing) as business decisions are made and then implemented.     Background

    Sports Reference LLC presently has 33 employees, is currently hiring five additional employees, and has plans for additional hires throughout 2024 and beyond. The Executive Team is made up of six individuals and as our company has grown gaps have opened up in our responsibilities and in the coverage of different tasks. This role is designed to be flexible and fill those gaps as they develop and are recognized.

    You will report to our founder and President, Sean Forman, and provide support to the entire Executive Team. You may at times work with our company departments for any special projects as suitable.

    Goals and Tasks for Your First Year (In rough order of importance)

    Must-Reach Goals and Tasks

    • Manage the calendar, travel, and correspondence of the company President and other Executive Team members as needed.
    • Organize, schedule and attend bi-annual company meetings, bi-annual executive team meetings, and occasional department-level meetings working with the Director of Operations and Strategic Planning.
    • Provide basic support for the Sports Reference hiring process.
    • Attend and support Executive Team meetings. Create minutes for the meetings, develop meeting agendas, summarize post-meeting action plans, and in some cases moderate portions of the meetings.
    • Attend and support select departmental meetings, synthesizing and distributing notes and supporting the needs of the meeting leaders.
    • Handle a multitude of special projects throughout the year such as:
      • Research projects for the Executive Team.
      • Vetting of vendors for different company requirements.
    • Basic editing and review of company documents before publication.

    Nice-to-Reach Goals and Tasks

    • With the Marketing Team, develop a plan for the company President to promote Sports Reference via social media and other outlets on his behalf (e.g. ghost-writing social media posts).
    • Manage the company wiki, organize company documentation, and provide support to Sports Reference.

    Qualifications and Skills

    A qualified candidate will satisfy the following:

    • Evidence that you are capable of meeting many of the goals listed above.
    • You must be available to work full-time no later than March 15th.
    • A bachelor's degree.
    • You must be a U.S. resident, eligible to work in the United States, and reside in proximity to Philadelphia. We are a remote company, but you will need to be in Philadelphia somewhat regularly to support company meetings and occasional work at the office. We do provide a stipend to people who relocate as part of their acceptance of a role at Sports Reference.
    • Important personal traits for this role include:
      • The ability to work respectfully and collaboratively with others.
      • The ability to assess work to be done, ask relevant refining questions as needed, and prioritize appropriately.
      • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
      • Maintain confidentiality with regard to company information and discussions.
    • You must be very comfortable with technology and standard office software packages. We use Slack and Google tools (docs and sheets) extensively.
    • You will need to travel for company meetings multiple times a year. This would include a weeklong set of meetings typically scheduled for early May.
    • You will on occasion need to move boxes, tables and chairs to organize our office or prepare for meetings and events.
    • Have a history of getting things done (and done well).

    Salary

    Given that this position is a non-exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act, pay will be made at an hourly rate rather than a salary. The salary range for this position starts at $26/hour. You will be a full-time employee and be eligible for standard company benefits, annual bonus, and overtime pay.

    We are a remote-first company and determine our pay range for this position based on the market rates for Philadelphia, our home base. The salary offered will be based on your experience and skill level.

    Annual bonuses are variable and are tied to a percentage of the company's end of year profits and the employee's time worked and salary earned during the year. In the last three years, they have averaged 15% of annual salary.

    Benefits

    Even though we are a small company, Sports Reference has a generous benefits package.

    • The total value of our benefits package is up to $30,000.
    • We cover full health and dental insurance costs for full-time employees and their dependent children. We cover 70%-80% of plans for an entire family.
    • We have a 401k with a match on your contributions up to 4% of your base salary. The 401k has many low cost investing options.
    • We pay all premiums for company-sponsored life and long-term disability insurance for all employees.
    • We provide up to $7,000/year in continuing education benefits.
    • Even though we need you to be near Philly, you will have the option to work remotely the majority of days. We generally work a standard workday, but with flexibility to flex hours within that framework.
    • Any parent welcoming a new child to their family is entitled to 13 weeks of fully paid leave, and up to an additional 26 weeks at half-time.
    • Employees begin with 18 days of PTO per year and an additional 8 paid company holidays and accrue sick leave at the rate of one day per month.
    • We will generally buy you whatever equipment will make you the most productive.
    • We typically will pay for reasonable moving-related expenses related to your acceptance of a position with Sports Reference. Please ask if you have any questions related to this benefit.
    • We provide a $53.50/month remote work stipend to cover the cost of internet access and incidental expenses.

    Other Information

    • Sports Reference's first site was launched in 2000. We have bootstrapped ourselves to 33 full-time employees and have no venture capital backing.
    • We are willing to provide accommodations for candidates for whom the timing or structure of our interview process may be challenging.
