Job Overview
This role is for a senior-level geotechnical engineer with at least 10 years of experience, including 5 in a lead capacity, to manage complex engineering projects across the Mid-Atlantic region. The position involves full-cycle project management—from proposal writing and risk mitigation to technical calculations and on-site execution—while serving as the primary client liaison. Candidates must hold or be able to obtain a PE license in Pennsylvania and bring deep expertise in regional subsurface conditions, advanced geotechnical software, and regulatory compliance. Strong leadership, communication, and mentoring skills are essential, along with a proven ability to deliver projects on time and within budget.
Responsibilities
- Project Management: Lead and oversee the execution of multiple geotechnical engineering projects, ensuring they are completed on time and within budget constraints. Utilize project management tools to monitor progress, allocate resources, and adjust plans as necessary.
- Schedule and Resource Coordination: Develop and maintain comprehensive project schedules. Collaborate with subcontractors to coordinate the delivery of materials and manage logistics effectively to meet milestone objectives.
- Client and Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as the primary liaison between clients, stakeholders, and the project team. Ensure that all communication is clear, timely, and supports project goals.
- Risk Assessment and Mitigation: Conduct thorough risk assessments for each project phase and implement advanced strategies to mitigate potential challenges before they impact detailed engineering efforts.
- Business Development Support: Provide technical expertise in crafting compelling proposals that highlight the firm's capabilities in geotechnical engineering solutions, directly supporting ARM's business development initiatives.
- Technical Calculations and Documentation: Execute and validate complex geotechnical calculations, maintaining a high standard of accuracy in all project-related documentation and specifications.
- Contract and Proposal Preparation: Draft and review comprehensive client proposals and contract documents, ensuring alignment with project requirements and consulting internal partners when necessary.
- Project Scope Management: Monitor adherence to the project's scope, swiftly addressing deviations to maintain alignment with client expectations and project deliverables.
- Problem Identification and Resolution: Anticipate and identify non-routine conditions or challenges, devising effective engineering solutions that are both innovative and practical.
Qualifications
- Licensing: Possession of an active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Pennsylvania, or the ability to obtain it within 6 months is required.
- Experience: Minimum of 10 years of experience in geotechnical design and project management, specifically in a consulting environment, with at least 5 years in a senior or lead engineering role.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering is mandatory. A master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering or a related field is strongly preferred.
- Technical Expertise:
- Advanced proficiency in geotechnical analysis software such as Slope/W, Settle3, and LPILE, as well as strong skills in AutoCAD and MS Office Suite.
- Demonstrated expertise in Mid-Atlantic region subsurface conditions, including limestone karst, glacial till, shale formations, and coal seams.
- Familiarity with the latest geotechnical investigation techniques and technologies, including in-situ testing and laboratory methods.
- Communication Skills: Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and engage with clients effectively, focusing on deliverables, project goals, and high-quality service.
