Position Summary
The Senior Operations Engineer provides advanced technical support to transmission system operations and field teams to ensure the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of high-voltage assets. This role serves as the subject matter expert for synchronous condenser operations, supports real-time system events and outage coordination with ERCOT, and leads operational modeling, procedures, and cross-functional collaboration to maintain system reliability and performance.
Job Function
- Serve as the operations engineering subject matter expert for synchronous condenser assets
- Provide real-time monitoring, predictive and preventative maintenance support, and troubleshooting for synchronous condenser operations
- Support system operators during real-time events and emergency conditions
- Provide technical shift support related to operating parameters, voltage analysis, relay operations, and alarm investigations
- Act as the technical liaison between operations and engineering and planning teams
- Lead ERCOT market notice reviews and coordinate responses
- Perform annual technical procedure reviews and coordinate stakeholder approvals
- Support Network Operations Model Change Request (NOMCR) submissions and coordination with ERCOT
- Assist SCADA teams with alarm functionality reviews, limit validation, and system enhancements
- Coordinate relay event report reviews with protection and control engineers and field technicians
- Participate in new project design reviews to ensure operational requirements are incorporated
- Support the development and maintenance of technical operating documentation
- Represent operations in internal and external working groups related to system operations and network data
- Model planned outages prior to submission to ERCOT
- Perform real-time outage modeling as needed to support system operations
- Coordinate outage requests with internal and external stakeholders
- Identify switching solutions for outages, contingencies, and system limitations
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology
- Minimum of seven years of experience in transmission system operations
- Experience with ERCOT nodal protocols and operating guides
- Experience with ERCOT System Operations Test Environment (SOTE)
- Experience with ERCOT Network Operations Model Change Request (NOMCR) processes
- Experience using Power System Simulator for Engineering (PSSE)
- Experience with rotating equipment and synchronous machine technology preferred
- Prior experience in a power plant or generation environment is preferred
Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in the state of Texas preferred
- Strong understanding of power systems and protection systems
- Knowledge of synchronous and induction machine technology
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics, protection and control circuits, and AC/DC diagrams
- Ability to interpret single-line diagrams
- General understanding of SCADA systems and control systems
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Ability to quickly adapt to computer-based systems for data entry, tracking, and reporting
- Ability to create clear technical presentations, charts, tables, and graphs
