Sr. Relay Technician
Location: Omaha, NE
A nationally recognized, full-service engineering, procurement, construction, and testing & commissioning company specializing in medium and high voltage electrical infrastructure across North America is seeking a dedicated and experienced Relay Technician.
This role involves testing, commissioning, calibrating, and maintaining protective relays and related systems within substations, power plants, and industrial settings. Ideal candidates will have hands-on experience with both electromechanical and microprocessor-based relays and a strong understanding of relevant industry standards such as IEEE, NETA, and NFPA.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform installation, commissioning, testing, and maintenance of protective relaying equipment, DFR systems, SCADA systems, distribution automation systems, and related communication equipment.
Collaborate with electrical engineers to troubleshoot and resolve system issues.
Conduct function testing of substation control circuits involving relay panels, transformers, and circuit breakers.
Execute end-to-end relay testing using Doble ProTesT software to verify carrier and fiber systems.
Assist in developing standardized commissioning, testing, and maintenance procedures for protective relays, DFRs, RTUs, IEDs, and communication systems.
Manage on-site project activities and serve as the primary point of contact for customers and vendors.
Support general electrical maintenance activities within plant environments as needed.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Minimum of 3 years of experience in relay testing and commissioning.
Strong understanding of protection schemes for transmission, distribution, and generation systems.
Proficiency with relay test equipment such as Doble, Omicron, or Manta.
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and relay logic.
Familiarity with NETA standards and procedures.
Strong communication and documentation skills.
Ability to pass pre-employment and random drug testing, background check, and a fit-for-duty physical exam.
Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
Willingness to travel and work overtime as needed.
Ability to climb ladders, stand for long periods, and travel by car or air as required.
Preferred Qualifications:
NETA Level II, III, or IV Certification.
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or related field.
Experience with relay software such as SEL AcSELerator, GE Enervista, or ABB PCM.
OSHA 10/30 and NFPA 70E certification or training.
