    JOB TITLE:  HUMAN RESOURCES GENERALIST

    JOB SUMMARY:

    The Human Resources (HR) Generalist will serve as a key member of our HR Services team working closely with University leadership, employees, and HR colleagues to execute people initiatives across the organization. Reporting to the Director of HR Services, this role is accountable for providing generalist services which support all aspects of the employee lifecycle including employee onboarding, talent acquisition, talent management, employee engagement, performance management, policy management and employee offboarding. The primary function of this role is to provide HR support to all levels of employees and assist with projects and processes across a full range of HR functions. Success in this role will require the ability to partner closely with internal constituents in implementing best HR practices for the University. This is a busy role that offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced HR Generalist to continue developing their HR career in an educational institution.

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Serve as primary HR point of contact for employees in assigned client groups.
    • Manage HR operations and maintain ample knowledge on all aspects of the HR function and policies.
    • Provide guidance on the application of University HR policies; stay abreast of impending regulatory changes and resulting policy changes, provide support and input to policy revision and policy initiation.
    • Maintain workforce compliance by staying up to date with local, state, and federal employment regulations.
    • Provide guidance on performance management issues, lead investigations, work closely with managers and employees to track, measure and report HR concerns and provide recommendations for development, corrective action and improvement; managing the separation process as necessary.
    • Manage the onboarding, offboarding and employee change processes; serve as a liaison between management and payroll, ensuring all required approvals and information are properly attained and accurately reflected in a timely manner. Ensure compliance with I-9 requirements.
    • Collaborate with HR Services Director and leadership to develop and implement engagement and retention strategies.
    • Build and maintain relationship with senior leadership and staff; gain knowledge and stay aware of assigned client group functionality, goals, and challenges in order to offer programs aimed at improving workforce/employee engagement.
    • Support employee engagement efforts by assisting in the development, coordination and execution of employee surveys, engagement programs, etc.
    • Facilitate monthly new hire orientation/onboarding program.
    • Participate in the benchmarking of best practices and industry trends to integrate new and enhanced solutions and initiatives to address internal challenges.
    • Coordinate and facilitate training and professional development programs on University policies and processes.
    • Participate in development of HR policies, employee, and supervisor communications, training, and HR solutions to employee engagement challenges.
    • Promote a workplace culture recognized as fair, respectful, adult, inclusive and challenging.
    • Articulate the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion; championing related work.  
    • Serve the employees’ work environment needs routinely, and in times of emergency management, by partnering closely with Public Safety, Facilities and Environmental Health and Safety; assisting the University’s emergency management deployment center as needed on an on-call basis.
    • Manage special projects as assigned.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

    This position may periodically manage a student worker, graduate assistant, or part time employees.

     

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    This position operates in a professional office environment and is required to use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have regular and consistent attendance. A hybrid schedule may be considered. The employee may occasionally be required to do the following: stand, move about, sit, walk for extended periods of time across campus, carry work and use controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, and communicate. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 10 lbs.

     

    POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

    This position is full-time, and the expected hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but may regularly require longer hours and occasional weekend work.

     

    TRAVEL

    Travel is primarily local and may include visits to the other NY campuses.

     

    REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of practical experience in Human Resources and recruitment, preferably in multiple HR specialty areas or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Must be able to interact effectively with all levels of employees
    • Demonstrated agility and adaptability with experience working in fast paced environments
    • Intermediate level proficiency with Microsoft Office and Office 365 required; experience with employee data management systems preferred.
    • Solid knowledge of HR policies and employment law (federal, state, and local laws)
    • SHRM Certified Profession (SHRM-CP) a plus

    _In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $60,000 - $62,000.  St. John’s University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.  _
