    Specific Job Title: Assistant Director for Social Justice

    Reports to : Director of Vincentian Service and Social Justice

    Job Summary:

    The Assistant Director for Social Justice has a strong academic and logistics background in the facilitation of social justice, reflection, and direction with young adults, directed through the Vincentian charism. The Assistant Director possesses a strong capacity to develop and implement action-oriented programs that assist students in recognizing and uncovering structures or patterns that continue to cause these inequities. The Assistant Director mut be able to lead a variety of justice activities, as well as have an ability to collaborate with internal and external groups, to help students develop these connections.

    Essential Functions:

    • Offer Social Justice programming and consciousness within university community and the Mission unit (i.e. Campus Ministry, V.I.S.A., etc.); Connect with student groups around campus for collaborative planning (i.e. SALT summit, CSMG, UN visits)
    • Collaboration with offices at the University in the development of justice efforts (i.e. Office of Multicultural Affairs, Social Justice minor, ACEI, CRES, LGTBQ+ Center, etc.)
    • Chair University Service Day
    • Work with Coordinator Academic Service Learning to facilitate the effort
    • Connect with both internal and external constituents to ensure participants are engaged and connected to this Vincentian Service effort;
    • Assist with coordination of branch (global) campuses.
    • Serve as mission representative on the CRS Global Campus Committee;
    • Support the development of the Ozanam Scholars by supporting various workshops and activities consistent with the themes of social justice, Vincentian leadership, and scholarly research;
    • Foster and develop post graduate service efforts, in collaboration with Career Services, VISA alumni, etc.
    • Other duties as assigned

    Competencies:

    This position requires:

    • Knowledge and understanding of Vincentian values and reflection;
    • Understanding of student development practice and leadership development.
    • Knowledge and understanding of social justice issues and concerns, and a working knowledge of Catholic Relief Services;
    • Demonstration of competencies in pastoral skills, relationship management, organizational skills, communication, and mentoring skills, with an ability to work collaboratively in working groups;

    Supervisory Responsibility:

    This position does not manage employees in the department

    Work Environment:

    This position operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc. including a proficiency in Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook; and an ability to learn and operate other programs such as Concur, Access, Banner, etc.

    Physical Demands:

    There are no physical demands required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

    This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30pm. This position can require longer-than-normal-work-day-hours, as well as, weekend work.

    Travel:

    Travel is primarily local and may include visits to the other NY campuses. Immersion trip travel can be domestic and/or international that is required.

    Required Education and Experience:

    This position requires:

    • Bachelor’s degree in related field;
    • Two years of experience in field of ministry (High School, College, Parish, etc.)
    • Knowledge of programs, projects and efforts related, but not limited to, student development leadership, prayer, service, and social justice.

    Preferred Education and Experience:

    The preferred education and experience for this position is:

    • Masters’ degree in related field;
    • Three years of experience in field of ministry (High School, College, Parish, etc.)
    • Experience in management of programs, projects and efforts related, but not limited to, student development leadership, prayer, service, and social justice.

    Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

    • Must possess a driver’s license

    In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $58,500 . St. John’s University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

    This position may be relocated to any of St. John’s University’s physical locations at any time.
