    Job Description

    JOB SUMMARY

    Under the supervision of the VP of Development, the Major Donors Fundraising Consultant will serve as a key member of the Development Division, holding primary responsibility for qualifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major donors, with emphasis on major gifts (solicited gifts in excess of $15,000). The Major Donors Fundraising Consultant will play an integral role in executing a formal strategy to support targeting at a minimum of ten new major donors (defined as annual giving $15,000 and greater) and cultivating these relationships. Candidates must have a commitment to helping low-income, homeless, and disenfranchised individuals and families make progress toward self-sufficiency.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Major Donors Fundraising Consultant key areas of responsibility and duties include:  

    KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY: 

    • Identify, cultivate, and secure major gifts from at least 10 new donors per year. 
    • In collaboration with the VP of Development, meet and exceed budgeted goal for unrestricted and restricted Major Gifts, focusing on solicited gifts in excess of $15,000.
    • Use strong verbal and written communication skills to articulate the mission and needs of St. Joseph Center and to make persuasive oral and written presentations.
    • Directly manage a portfolio of new donors with the capacity to contribute major gifts.
    • With oversight and assistance from the VP of Development, support Board members and CEO in their efforts to secure major gifts.
    • Work closely with Donor Relations Manager and VP of Development to develop specific solicitation strategies.
    • Establish stewardship strategies for key donors. 
    • Enter and track donor gifts and all communications in the agency’s Raiser’s Edge database.
    • Lead and/or participate in agency tours with donor prospects, current supporters, and others, coordinating participation of Board members and senior staff as required.
    • Attend meetings and/or staff events that may take place in the evening or on weekends.
    • Review donor lists for agency publications and other recognition efforts
    • Special projects as assigned

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

    • COMMITMENT TO ORGANIZATIONAL MISSION AND VALUES: Mission-driven, with a demonstrated passion for low-income, homeless, and disenfranchised individuals and families making progress toward self-sufficiency and the values of the Sisters of Carondelet.
    • MAJOR GIFT SOLICITATION: Knowledge of best practices in major gift procurement, policies and processes.
    • STAKEHOLDER SERVICE-MINDSET: Provides timeline and professional service to both internal and external stakeholders; is responsive to donor needs and requests; is always courteous to the stakeholder and considers the needs of the stakeholder when making decisions.
    • EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION: Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; demonstrates ability to tailor messages appropriately to various internal and external stakeholders; shares information; actively listens and involves others.
    • INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Changes interpersonal style and approach based in circumstance or audiences; works with all kinds of groups and people; does not judge others.
    • INITIATIVE & ACCOUNTABILITY: Takes action on his/her own without being prompted; handles problems independently and is able to resolve issues without relying on extensive help from others; Holds self-accountable for delivering on commitments; owns mistakes and uses them as opportunities for learning and development.

    EXPERIENCE:

    • 3-5 years of experience in of major gift fundraising experience, preferably in a social service environment. 
    • Demonstrated working knowledge of the principles and best practices of major gift fundraising, including planning, implementing and administering solicitations. 
    • Experience in fields relevant to St. Joseph Center’s mission, including mental health, housing, family services, early childhood learning and veteran’s services.

    EDUCATION:

    • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in communications, marketing, public administration or a related field; a combination of education and experience may be substituted.

    DIRECT REPORTS:

    This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.  

    COMPUTER SKILLS:

    • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
    • Ability to use widely supported internet browsers
    • Experience with a donor database required (Raiser’s Edge preferred).

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS:

    • Valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions. 
    • Valid automobile liability insurance.

    TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

    • This position requires travel to SJC locations and will also have weekend and evening responsibilities as needed.
