    Nursing Manager for the Surgical Services Department at St. Joseph Hospital Eureka.

    $20,000 SIGN ON BONUS

    Location: Eureka, CA

    Work Schedule: Full Time - 80 Biweekly Hours

    Shift: 8-hour, Days (Variable Shifts)

    Job Summary

    Reports to the VP, Chief Operating Officer with a dotted line reporting to the VP, Chief Nursing Officer and maintains 24 hour accountability in planning, managing, controlling and organizing comprehensive, safe, efficient, and high quality patient care. Assists in the administration of the budgetary functions. The Nurse Manager is responsible for coordinating the daily operations and clinical practice of the assigned service area. Establishes and maintains standards of care and unit policies and procedures established by the Hospital and in respect to the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma and California Title 22 guidelines. Adheres to the ANA Nurse Administration Scope & Standards of Practice.

    Care Of Patients

    Essential Functions:

    • Assures that effective and appropriate care is provided to Trauma and Acute Care Surgery patients when applicable. Demonstrates the ability to assess/meet the psychosocial and developmental age-related needs of the specific population served.
    • Employs strategies to foster health promotion, health teaching, and the provision of the other educational services and resources.
    • Assures that protocols or guidelines reflect evidence based practice, including accepted changes in care management, and addresses emerging problems.
    • Uses creativity and innovation in nursing practice to improve care delivery and population outcomes.
    • Oversees management across the continuum of trauma care, which includes the planning and implementation of clinical protocols and practice management guidelines, monitoring care of in-house patients, and serving as a resource for clinical practice.

    Management Of Human Resources

    • Treats employees appropriately, creating an environment that reflects the values of dignity, excellence, service, and justice.
    • Assures that staff education and training needs are met on a timely basis.
    • Provides guidance and direction in resolving complex employee relations issues.
    • Ensures minimal disruption of daily operations as issues arise, performing values-based verbal and written counseling as needed.
    • Conducts performance reviews on a regular and timely basis, providing opportunities for personnel development through appropriate delegation, coaching, and performance analysis.
    • Oversees the training of trauma resuscitation nurses assuring competency.
    • Evaluates the performance and of the trauma nurses and contributes information to the annual competency evaluation of each.
    • Provides feedback as needed to improve performance. 9. Provides the trauma nurse education to the trauma resuscitation nurses, the rapid response nurses and the Emergency Room TNCC RNs to maintain competency.

    Financial Management & Resource Utilization

    • Participates in development and justification of the operating and capital budget plan.
    • Monitors budget compliance, and initiates corrective action in a timely manner.
    • Administers expense and revenue reports, assurance of charge process, productivity and budget data for assigned clinical areas.
    • Monitors and adjusts staffing patterns based on patient care requirements and department needs consistent with productivity measures.
    • Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, cost, and impact on practice in the planning and delivery of nursing and other services. Manages as appropriate, the operational, personnel, and financial aspects of the trauma program.
    • Serves as a liaison to administration, and represents the trauma program on various hospital and community committees to enhance and foster optimal trauma care management.

    Compliance

    • Develops, implements, and monitors compliance with departmental policies and procedures, ensuring that they are in compliance with standards of practice and regulatory body’s guidelines.
    • Oversees departmental personnel and medical record maintenance: current licensure, certification, orientation, performance appraisals, quality controls, and log of operations and competencies.
    • Works with Trauma Medical Director, fosters a collaborative, interdisciplinary and interdepartmental, environment to achieve regulatory compliance required by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma and California Title 22.
    • Monitors clinical processes, outcomes & system issues related to the quality of care provided. Develops quality filters, audits and case reviews. Identifies trends and sentinel events and helps outline remedial actions while maintaining confidentiality.
    • Responsible for meeting the expectations of a successful ACSC survey.

    Improving Performance & Quality Of Practice

    • Collects and analyzes comprehensive data, identifies expected outcomes. Develops, implements & evaluates a plan to attain expected outcomes.
    • Systematically enhances the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice, nursing services administration & the delivery of services.
    • Drives quality improvement programs and activities.
    • Uses the result of quality improvement activities to initiate changes in nursing practice and in the healthcare delivery system.
    • Assures the development & implementation of an effective, ongoing program to measure, assess and improve the quality of care, treatment & services delivered.
    • Evaluates the practice environment and quality of nursing care rendered in relation to existing evidence, identifying opportunities for the generation and use of research.
    • Supervises the collection, coding, scoring & development of processes for the validation of data. Designs the registry to facilitate performance improvement activities, trend reports & research while protecting confidentiality. Has an active involvement in any research projects or the analysis and distribution of the findings. Facilitates protocol design for accurate data collection, feedback & analysis.

    Service & Advocacy

    • Develops & maintains cooperative working relationships with various hospital departments and outside agency personnel.
    • Regularly participates as a member of various hospital and/or medical staff committees in order to provide input into development of service goals, plans & objectives.
    • Demonstrates & promotes excellence in customer service when dealing with patient/family, physician & employee issues.
    • Advocates for the protection & rights of individuals, families, communities, populations, healthcare providers, nursing & other professions & institution and organizations, especially related to health & safety.
    • Positively represents SJE in our community through coordination and support of educational in-services and participation in community education programs.

    • Keeps Director informed about significant events, problems & corrective action taken.
    • Services as a member of designated committees. Performs & respond to committee needs & requests.

    • Collaborates with multiple departments to achieve hospital and ACSC strategic initiatives & goals.

    • Functions as a positive and effective role model who establishes quality standards and performance expectations.
    • Collaborates with Nursing Directors of ED & Trauma and Trauma Medical Director in developing plans for future programs, goals & initiatives of the Trauma Services Department an in communicating, implementing & monitoring results.
    • Provides consultation to influence the identified plan, enhance the abilities of others & effect change.
    • Attains knowledge & competency that reflect current practice in order to develop, maintain & improve skills in the nurse management role.
    • Promotes advancement of the profession through participation in professional organizations.
    • Provides for intrafacility staff development, participates in case review, implements practice guidelines & directs community trauma education and prevention programs.

    Skills

    • Knowledge of nursing theory, practice & administration in order to oversee planning & implementation of patient care.
    • Knowledge of the American College of Surgeons Committee on trauma & the California Title 22 guidelines for optimal trauma care.
    • Ability to work closely with Trauma Medical Director and the Director of Emergency Services & Trauma.
    • Knowledge of the organization, operation & coordination of several patient care services, in-depth & up-to-date knowledge of patient care theories & practices and ability to contribute to overall department administration.
    • Interpersonal skills necessary to provide effective leadership of subordinates, maintain a variety of internal & external contacts & work cooperatively with the medical staff, hospital managers, executives & department staff.
    • Analytical abilities necessary to evaluate delivery of care systems.
    • Knowledge of current trends & developments in area(s) of responsibility.

    Minimum Position Requirements

    Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.

    Licenses/Certifications

    • Current CA RN License.
    • BLS.
    • ACLS.
    • PALS.
    • ATCN or TNCC.
    • National certification in specialty area or professional certification in Nursing Administration or Management as approved by American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Magnet within 18 months.

    Education

    Preferred Position Qualifications:

    • Master's Degree in Nursing or related field.
    • Coursework/Training - 16 hours of trauma related continuing education credits per year in the care of injured patients.

    Experience: 5 years Trauma nursing experience.

    Licenses/Certifications: ATCN Directorship.
