    Job Description

    St. Luke’s School seeks a skilled leader to join its divisional administrative team as Assistant Head of Upper School. Reporting to Head of Upper School Liz Perry, the Assistant Head of Upper School works closely with the Head of Upper School and Dean of Students. In this school-year (i.e. ten-month) staff position, the Assistant Head of Upper School is both faculty-facing and student-facing, participating in the St. Luke’s Faculty Growth & Renewal (FGR), the grade-level Dean Team, Community Support Services Team (CSST), and the Upper School Academic Council. As St. Luke’s embarks on a new Strategic Plan, the Assistant Head of Upper School will play a key role in supporting new initiatives. The role requires cross-cultural competence and a strong knowledge of inclusive instructional pedagogy. The Assistant Head of Upper School teaches one academic class. 

    The following duties fall within the responsibilities of this position:    STUDENT-FACING

    • Work with the Head of the Upper School and Dean of Students to set the tone and the direction of the Upper School
    • Serve as a member of the Dean Team
    • Serve as a member of CSST and partner with the Director of Counseling Services to lead the process for managing students of concern, especially where academic, emotional, and psychological issues intersect
    • Manage the medical leave process for students, including the return-to-school plan
    • With the Director of the Center for Leadership, Dean of Students, and the class deans, coordinate the Honor Council and bring cases to the Honor Council; communicate with families and write follow-up letters

    FACULTY-FACING 

    • Participate as a member of the FGR Team
    • Help teachers set meaningful professional goals
    • Observe classes, give direct and diplomatic feedback, and create trusting relationships across all disciplines
    • Administer Upper School student surveys twice per year
    • Assist the Head of Upper School in planning and running division meetings
    • Propose and lead professional development experiences for the Upper School faculty and staff
    • In partnership with the Assistant Head of School, lead hiring teams as needed
    • Coordinate the morning meeting calendar for Faculty & Staff

      PROGRAM LEADERSHIP

    • Partner with the Center for Leadership and the Upper School Dean of Students to implement the Community Goals for Learning program
    • Make creative use of space and lead stewardship of our physical environment (lockers, dining commons, hallways)
    • Work with the Director of Equity & Inclusion and Upper School E&I Coordinator to implement best practices in campus discourse and discussions relating to DEI issues 
    • Assist the Head of the Upper School in planning and running parent events
    • Oversee a dynamic and well-managed afterschool co-curricular program in the Upper School
    • Take a leadership role in launching new programs to support the School’s Strategic Plan
    • Together with the Head of the Upper School, create policies and structures that help us meet institutional priorities

    Qualifications

    The ideal Assistant Head of Upper School will be an excellent and experienced classroom teacher or administrator who fosters a positive environment. This person will be a skilled leader who can be effective at coaching teachers. This person must maintain strong connections with colleagues through warmth, humor, and a degree of equanimity. A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is essential. As the FGR Team is responsible for making recommendations to the Head of School regarding salary increases, and the CSST handles sensitive details regarding students, the Assistant Head of Upper School must be responsible managing confidential information. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated the ability to have candid professional conversations with colleagues as well as difficult conversations with students and parents. As the Assistant Head of Upper School serves on multiple teams, a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively is critical to this role.
