    Job Description

St. Luke’s School seeks an inspiring and collaborative historian and educator who is eager to apply their strengths to leading our Middle School History program.

At this moment, History teachers stand at a critical juncture in educating young people to understand and navigate the political, economic and social contexts in which we all live. We seek a colleague who understands their classroom role as mentor and coach to be every bit as crucial as content expert; who enthusiastically advocates for critical reading, reflection, and research as the tools of responsible students and citizens; and who embraces opportunities for challenging but age-appropriate conversations about individual, national, and cultural identities in and out of the classroom.

As Department Chair you will lead the professional growth and development of your faculty and the ongoing design and delivery of a forward-looking history curriculum.  A successful candidate will join a team of passionate and enthusiastic teachers who bring history to life for students, love teaching and learning, and relish being a joyful presence in the lives of young people.

    PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Collaborate as a member of the Middle School Council with the Division Head and fellow department chairs in the development and delivery of the Middle School program.
    • Work with the Upper School History Department Chair and faculty to fully align our middle-through-high school history course of study.
    • Conduct ongoing observations and evaluations of department teachers with an eye toward fostering their continuous professional growth and renewal.
    • Work with the Admissions team, department teachers, students, and families to apply consistent and appropriate placement standards for both returning and newly matriculating students.
    • Teach a full-time course load of Middle School history classes to be determined.
    • Help lead or assist in an after-school activity for three seasons (athletic coaching preferred).
    • Serve as co-advisor for a group of 6 to 8 students.
    • Assist with supervisory and other duties as assigned, such as lunchroom or chaperoning events.
