Queens Public Library is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Staff Accountant to join the finance team. This role will be reporting to the Vice President of Finance and will be responsible for assisting the senior accountant with the preparation of financial reports, ensuring accurate financial record-keeping, performing account reconciliations, preparing and maintaining supporting schedules, and assisting with audit preparations. Performs other duties as assigned.

• Ensures accuracy and compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) for balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, and functional expense statements.
• Prepares and records journal entries, ensuring transactions align with GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting standards.
• Reconciles bank accounts and balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis.
• Assists in the month-end and year-end closing process to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
• Works with development team to ensure proper documentation and allocation of restricted funds.
• Helps maintain internal controls and financial policies to ensure regulatory compliance and fiscal accountability.
• Analyzes actual financial results versus prior period/budgeted figures and providing explanations for any discrepancies.
• Continuously looks for ways to streamline accounting processes, reduce errors, and improve efficiency.
• Stays current on financial regulations, accounting standards and industry best practices.
• Performs other accounting duties as required or assigned.
• Assists in preparing and monitoring annual budgets.
• Supports the finance team with external annual audits by gathering necessary documentation and responding to auditor inquiries.
• Assists with the preparation and filing of 990 tax returns, and any other statutory requirements.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required.
• A minimum of two years of experience in accounting, finance, or related field.
• Strong knowledge and understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
• Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
• Excellent organization and time management skills.
• Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly with Excel.

This is a union position, represented by District Council 37. The starting annual salary is $60,759.
