    POSITION SUMMARY:

    Ballard is looking for a Senior Estimator who will lead and collaborate on bid/proposal preparation, negotiate contracts with clients, subcontractors and work closely with design teams LOCATED OUT OF OUR BENICIA, CALIFORNIA OFFICE!

    THIS IS A HIGHLY INTERACTIVE ROLE WITH UNPARALLELED CAREER ADVANCEMENT OPPORTUNITIES. BALLARD IS DEDICATED TO HIRING OUR NEXT BUSINESS UNIT LEADER FOR THIS POSITION AND IS COMMITTED TO PROVIDING MENTORING AND GUIDANCE TO MAKE THE RIGHT TEAM MEMBER SUCCESSFUL!

     The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in the following key areas:    

    • Scheduling      
    • Scope lump sum bids    
    • HeavyBid advanced entry skills
    • Have a proven track record estimating in one or more of the following areas: bridge, underground, marine, cut and cover transit stations, navigation locks, dams, flood protection systems, or heavy steel structures.

    Required Skills

    KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Serve as lead estimator, oversee project estimates, and technical proposals to ensure a quality, accurate and timely submission.

    • Perform material take-offs, organize pre-bid data, research past costs and develop construction sequence.

    • Cultivate strong business relationships with industry clients, owners, subcontractors and internal corporate entities.

    • Performs site visits and investigations as needed.

    • Produces pre-bid construction documents, questions, bond/insurance requests and project schedules.

    • Conduct constructability studies and provide relevant technical solutions to our clients.

    • Presents estimate quantities, rationale, and work-plan to management during bid reviews.

    • Manages and facilitates formulation of bid phase project risk registers.

    • Organizes and conducts handoff of project to operations when awarded.

    • Attend and engage in internal management meetings 

    • Prepare and assist with presentations and departmental strategic plans

    • Support business development and tradeshow efforts as needed (technical committee participation)

    • Assume additional responsibilities as directed by division and corporate management. Travel as required to attend meetings, site visits, training, etc.

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Proficiency with HCSS estimating software
    • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality
    • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
    • Strong problem solving and decision-making skills
    • Very high attention to detail
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills
    • Strong organization and time management skills
    • Ability to analyze data

    Required Experience

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Management or related field.
    • 8 years of estimating experience in heavy civil construction or 12 years combined field and project estimating experience in heavy civil construction required.
    • Experience with HCSS Heavy Bid / Heavy Job required.
    • Working knowledge of standard marine construction practices.
    • Excellent computer skills including Excel, MS Project, and Word.
    • Excellent technical writing and verbal skills.
    • Must be flexible to travel occasionally.
    • Ability to work very well and multitask under pressure.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills and creative thinking.
