Job Summary The Radiation Shielding Engineering Steel Detailer I will primarily be responsible for reviewing and drafting steel fabrication assemblies and components under the supervision of senior staff members.
This position offers comprehensive training in radiation shielding design within a highly specialized engineering environment. While prior radiation shielding experience is not required, candidates must demonstrate a strong desire to learn, exceptional attention to detail, and solid critical thinking skills.
The role involves reviewing and producing fabrication drawings based on proprietary shielding designs. The candidate will be responsible for detailing steel members and coordinating closely with internal manufacturing teams. As workload demands fluctuate, cross-training in shielding products may be provided to strengthen overall project understanding. Experience in building construction is not required but is considered a plus. Steel detailing experience is required.
Essential Functions & Key Responsibilities
Review fabrication drawing sets and provide accurate comments and corrections
Interpret drawings and extract all components required for detailing
Detail assemblies and break them down into individual parts, including proper keying and coordination
Produce accurate cut sheets and part schedules
Demonstrate strong drafting proficiency, organization, and problem-solving skills
Identify potential design issues and proactively communicate them to senior staff
Collaborate with manufacturing teams across multiple locations to ensure designs align with production capabilities
Anticipate construction and fabrication challenges and escalate concerns as needed

Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
Associate’s degree in drafting/design or related field is a plus
1–3 years of experience in steel fabrication detailing required
Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and design principles
Proficiency in 2D AutoCAD required; Revit experience is a plus
Solid knowledge of steel fabrication, including shapes, welding, and working with both imperial and metric systems
Ability to visualize three-dimensional structures from 2D drawings
Strong attention to detail in drafting standards, layout, and documentation
Ability to identify and suggest design improvements
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Team-oriented with strong interpersonal abilities
Physical Demands / Work Environment This role operates primarily in an office setting. The position requires frequent use of a computer and standard office equipment, along with regular communication via phone, email, and in person. The ability to move within the office and maintain visual focus for detailed drafting work is required. The work environment is typically moderate in noise level.
