Overview:
A Steerman plays a critical role in the safe transport of oversized and heavy haul loads. This position is responsible for controlling the rear axles of large trailers to ensure the load tracks properly through turns, tight job sites, and restricted roadways. While the Steerman does not control speed or braking, their precise steering is essential for safe navigation and may fall under CMV driver regulations depending on the configuration and state requirements. Additional responsibilities, the Steerman may operate as a chase pilot, following behind oversized loads to provide a safety buffer and alert other drivers. In this capacity, the Steerman communicates with the truck driver via radio regarding traffic conditions, hazards, and route challenges. The role includes managing traffic flow using warning signs and lights, ensuring compliance with transport regulations, and assisting with roadside inspections or minor mechanical issues when necessary.
Responsibilities:
Operates rear steering axles of large or articulated vehicles
Ensure trailers stay aligned and on course during transit
Communicates with front driver for coordinated vehicle control
Navigates tight turns, narrow roads, and complex routes
Monitors trailer position and adjust rear axles as needed
Supports safe maneuvering in urban, industrial, or construction areas
May assist in loading/unloading operations as required
Follows commercial motor vehicle (CMV) safety regulations and protocols
Follow oversized loads to provide a safety buffer
Alert other drivers to wide or slow-moving vehicles
Communicate with truck drivers via two-way radio
Report on traffic conditions and road hazards
Use warning signs, lights, and flags to manage traffic
Assist with routing and navigation support
Help with roadside inspections or minor repairs

Required Qualifications:
Must have experience with axle weight distribution.
Experience with dual lane trailers, 9-axles, and hydraulics is a plus.
Must have high mechanical aptitude as the position will require the assembly of dual lane trailers and suspension girders and performing inspections and preventive maintenance.
Ability to run heavy equipment is a plus.
Experience with Port of Entries.

Minimum 5 years driving experience
Minimum 3 years of oversize heavy haul experience
HAZMAT endorsement is a plus
Flexibility to travel is a must, which may include weekends and overnight stay
