  • Responsibilities

    Framatome Chemistry Services is seeking a Scientist/Chemist to perform advanced and more complex chemistry and related engineering assignments. This position requires the application of existing as well as the development of new techniques of addressing chemistry challenges associated with the operations of nuclear power plants world-wide.  The background can be from chemistry, materials science, mechanical, or nuclear-related fields and shall be able to prepare technical documentation (calculations, assessment, reports, design inputs, requirements, etc.) and also provide advanced technical support and review of the work of other team members. Work will be performed at both Framatome's Mill Ridge Road's offices and Mount Athos Road's Chemistry Material Center facilities in Lynchburg, VA.

     

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

    • Ensures personal and workplace compliance with company and regulatory agency policies that protect employee and public health and safety.
    • Serves as a senior technical analyst for complex scientific processes.
    • Provides client input regarding the use of scientific analysis of complex and multidisciplinary problems and processes.
    • Performs design tasks that include supporting the design of a system, evaluating a proposed design and evaluating the operation of a nuclear facility.
    • Devises new approaches to problems encountered by assessing the effectiveness of procedures considered for development.
    • Performs work to specification and procedural requirements.
    • Interprets results, prepares reports, and provides technical advice in specialized area.
    • Works with the team on research and development ideas
    • Leads projects

     

    ALL CANDIDATES MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY.  CANDIDATES WHO EXCEED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS MAY BE CONSIDERED FOR A HIGHER LEVEL POSITION.

    • SCIENTIST/CHEMIST IV - Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Physical, Chemical Engineering, or Applied Science plus 6-8 years of related work experience. Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge in a particular field of specialization to the completion of complex assignments.
    • PRINCIPAL SCIENTIST/CHEMIST - Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Physical, Chemical Engineering, or Applied Science plus 8-10 years of related work experience. Possesses and applies an advanced knowledge in a particular field of specialization and has completed projects of major complexity.
    • ADVISORY SCIENTIST/CHEMIST - Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Physical, Chemical Engineering, or Applied Science plus 12 years of related work experience. Possesses and applies an advanced knowledge in a particular field of specialization and has completed projects of major complexity.
    • An advanced Chemistry degree may be substituted for related experience (Masters, 1-2 years, or PhD, 1-3 years).

     

    THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS ARE DESIRED AND WILL BE USED TO DIFFERENTIATE ALL CANDIDATES WHO APPLY FOR THIS POSITION.

    • A strong working knowledge and experience in nuclear plant primary and/or secondary chemistry relating to PWRs or BWRs, including associated EPRI Guidelines and NRC rules, regulations, and policies
    • Experience in laboratory research and operations
    • Experience/knowledge in use of EPRI CHEMWORKS tool set (i.e., MULTEQ, pH Calculator, Simulator etc)
    • Exposure and/or knowledge with computer programming and scripting in FORTRAN, PYTHON, C++, plus LINUX environments is beneficial

  • Qualifications
    • Reading and writing ability at tenth-grade level required; prior custodial experience preferred
    • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida driver’s license and an insurable driving record
    • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions and to perform routine custodial duties without immediate supervision 
    • Ability to use a variety of cleaning chemicals in a safe manner, according to manufacturer’s specifications 
    • Ability to operate carpet vacuums, floor machines, carpet extractors, wet/dry vacuums, pressure washers and associated cleaning tools and power equipment 
    • Ability to apply recognized standards of good practice relevant to matters of safety, security and custodial techniques 
    • Ability to effectively plan and coordinate multi-task requirements and meet self and pre-imposed objectives and deadlines 
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, students and University community
