POSITION SUMMARY:

Strata Skin Sciences (Strata) is a medical technology company dedicated to advance the treatment of dermatologic conditions. Our products include the XTRAC® excimer laser and VTRAC® lamp systems utilized in the treatment of psoriasis, vitiligo and other autoimmune skin conditions that affect over 35 million patients in the United States alone. Our 100-person company designs, manufactures, and services units at our 28,000 sq. ft facility in Carlsbad, CA which is also ISO 13485 compliant and includes an in-house machine shop.

Hands-on technical lead for all R&D projects with responsibility for the planning, research and deployment of phototherapy treatment devices and all associated accessories. Reports directly to the Director of R&D and acts as the senior technical representative on the team and collaborates with management in the execution of projects. The Principal Engineer is also recognized as an internal expert and thought leader across multiple job areas. Other responsibilities include managing complex project initiatives and being the champion of new systems, concepts, or technologies that are of strategic importance to the company.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS INCLUDED BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

• Hands-on oriented physicist or engineer that can assemble/disassemble excimer laser systems and understand the theory of operation. Work and act independently is a necessity.
• Produce high quality solutions for projects and be able to apply scientific knowledge and principles to devise innovative solutions to unique design problems. Able to work on multiple major projects with excellent time management skills.
• Guide and direct all engineering teams (e.g. mechanical, electrical, software) to achieve program and technical success
• Provide technical leadership in architecture definition, requirements analysis, algorithms, interface definition, hardware and software design, procurement, integration, validation and verification.
• Provide engineering authority to all decisions impacting product integrity, system performance, and system functionality
• Develops or champions new systems, concepts, or technologies. Recommends tactics and strategies that directly impact the achievement of overall business or functional results.
• Communicate status, results, and recovery plans (if needed) to management
• Provide a technical liaison with suppliers, manufacturing/operations and external customers.
• Responsible for the overall design content from concept through to detailed component drawings and specifications.
• Support new business development efforts through leading and writing proposals and presentations.
• Able to read engineering drawings, electrical schematics, follow and understand pseudocode/algorithms, as well as any other technical documentation. Create technical presentations to both internal and external customers.

EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing Engineering
• Minimum 15 years of relevant experience in laser and/or optical systems (or minimum of 10 years plus a graduate degree)
• Experience in a manufacturing or quality management environment is preferred
• Requires mastery level knowledge within laser technologies typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience. Viewed as an expert and/or resource within the field by peers in and outside the organization.
• Knowledge of various manufacturing techniques, assembly tooling, and fixtures used for laser and/or optical systems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• MS Degree and/or PhD Degree in Mechanical an applicable Engineering field.
• Previous work in a medical device industry and FDA-regulated quality system or environment with design and manufacturing documentation controls.
• Familiar with improvement methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, Design for Excellence (DfX), etc.

• Office, Laboratory and Manufacturing Environment
• May be required to stand for long periods of time and lift weight up to 30 pounds.
