    Job Description

    INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS INSTRUCTOR

    Strategies To Empower People (S.T.E.P.), a Supported Living Services agency that supports adults with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities, is currently seeking a full-time Independent Living Skills Instructor to join our team.

    The Independent Living Skills Instructor (ILS Instructor) is responsible for providing instruction and support to our independent living clients to assist them in maintaining their independence in their homes and in the community. Our independent living clients live independently on their own and require support and assistance by teaching self-advocacy, personal, domestic, medical, financial, social/recreational, and communication skills to help maintain their independence.

    *THIS IS NOT A MONDAY TO FRIDAY, 9AM TO 5PM POSITION. YOU WILL NEED TO BE ABLE TO WORK A FLEXIBLE WORK SCHEDULE WITH MINIMAL SUPERVISION. THIS IS NOT AN OFFICE JOB. YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE EXCELLENT TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS IN ORDER TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS POSITION.

    EXPECTATIONS OF POSITION:

    -Develop and follow a consistent training schedule of independent living skills with individual as determined by their Individual Service Plan (ISP) and Personalized Support Plan (PSP) and assist them in meeting their goals.

    -Promote and teach self-advocacy, personal, domestic, medical, financial, social/recreational, communication, and behavior management skills to maintain independence.

    -Report to supervisor immediately any decline in individual's health, welfare, problems with medications, changes in behavior, and any condition that may threaten the individual's ability to live as independently as possible.

    -Complete all required paperwork accurately and submit by scheduled due dates, including but not limited to, case notes, progress reports, assessments, documentation, Special Incident Reports, financial/medical logs, APS reports, etc.

    -Analyze difficult situations and use good judgment as to the appropriate course of action.

    -Manage multiple tasks (could include projects, duties, responsibilities depending on needs of individual supported and/or agency) with minimal or no supervision.

    -Provide intervention and continuous support during crisis situations using Pro-Act principles and practices, and by following any established behavior plan.

    -Assist and support with health and medical needs (i.e., assisting with ordering medications/refills, scheduling and attending medical appointments, developing and maintaining Medication Administration Records (MARS), ensuring needed adaptive equipment is ordered/maintained, etc.).

    -Actively participate and assist the individual in the hiring and supervision of IHSS (In-Home Support Services) staff, if applicable.

    -Assist and/or arrange transportation for individual, whether public or private, depending on individual needs.

    -Actively advocate for individuals' rights, requests, concerns, etc., by communicating effectively with supervisors.

    -Communicate professionally, accurately, and consistently with clients, staff, supervisors, co-workers, case managers, medical professionals, families, conservators, payees, etc.

    -Consistently attend all meetings as required, arriving on time, and participating in a professional manner.

    -Be an active participant in unit team.

    TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION YOU MUST (THIS IS NOT AN ALL-INCLUSIVE LIST):

    -Be a High School graduate or possess a GED or equivalent.

    -REQUIRED: POSSESS ONE (1) YEAR OF EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH INDIVIDUALS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL AND/OR INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES AND AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITY SYSTEM.

    -Experience working in Independent or Supported Living environments is preferred.

    -REQUIRED: POSSESS VALID CA DRIVER LICENSE, AND A SAFE, RELIABLE, REGISTERED AND CURRENTLY INSURED VEHICLE.

    -Must have good driving record and willing to participate in our DMV Pull Program.

    -Must be computer literate and be able to quickly and competently learn and use new computer programs and methods. Must be able to compile good reports using a variety of computer programs.

    -Possess or gain CPR/1st Aid certification and PRO-ACT certification, and if hired, must maintain throughout employment with agency.

    -Be cleared through post-offer criminal background check.

    -Successfully pass post-offer drug screening test.

    -Be able to read and write in the English language, in order to perform essential duties.

    -Possess basic mathematical skills.

    -Be punctual, flexible, reliable, adaptable, creative, patient, self-confident, and trustworthy.

    PAY FOR POSITION: $16-$18 per hour DEPENDING ON EXPERIENCE. Mileage reimbursement included at $0.58 per mile.
