Position Summary
The Substation Engineer 4 is a senior-level technical leader responsible for the design, construction, and oversight of complex substation and electrical power system projects. This role leads large, high-impact initiatives from concept through construction, performs advanced system studies and protection analysis, and serves as a subject-matter expert for regulatory compliance. The position provides technical guidance and mentorship to other engineers, coordinates with internal and external stakeholders, and applies sound engineering judgment to deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective substation solutions aligned with long-term strategic objectives.
Job Function
- Compile, evaluate, and analyze engineering design and test data.
- Utilize computer-assisted engineering and design software to perform detailed engineering analysis.
- Prepare and review technical specifications, drawings, test reports, and construction documents.
- Perform detailed engineering calculations to establish construction, installation, and operational standards.
- Design, implement, maintain, and improve electrical instruments, equipment, facilities, and systems.
- Manage and oversee large substation projects to ensure delivery on time and within budget.
- Coordinate with consultants, developers, customers, and government entities.
- Conduct construction inspections and resolve material and design issues.
- Perform fault studies and set protective relays for transformers, feeders, and transmission lines.
- Prepare conceptual design documents and support equipment procurement.
- Represent the organization in regulatory compliance efforts.
- Provide leadership and mentoring to less experienced engineers.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in a related engineering field.
- Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Texas.
- Minimum of eight (8) years of related engineering experience.
- Valid driver’s license.
Qualifications
- Proficiency in substation design and construction.
- Knowledge of power system materials and NERC PRC standards.
- Ability to read and develop engineering schematics and drawings.
- Experience with AutoCAD and ASPEN.
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Ability to analyze problems and make sound engineering decisions.
