Position Summary
The Substation Technician II is a skilled field-based role responsible for supporting the maintenance, construction, and operation of electrical substations and transmission systems. This position performs advanced troubleshooting, installs and repairs substation equipment and protective relays, and assists with system switching to maintain reliable power delivery. The role also involves overseeing contractors, ensuring work meets specifications, collecting system data for engineering, and promoting safe work practices while working in demanding outdoor environments with minimal supervision.
Job Function
- Participate in scheduled maintenance, repairs, and recordkeeping for substations and transmission systems
- Assist with the installation and removal of portable substations
- Support team development and contribute to a positive and safety-focused work environment
- Oversee contractors and internal crews on substation and transmission construction projects
- Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with specifications and standards
- Complete and verify job sheets, material lists, and invoices for accuracy
- Collect system load and voltage data for engineering analysis
- Install and repair overcurrent relays, microprocessor-based controls, and RTUs
- Perform substation switching for restoration, maintenance, and repairs
- Repair and replace the substation and related electrical equipment
- Troubleshoot complex and intermittent electrical system issues
- Read and interpret prints and construct wiring for substation relay panels
- Follow all safety procedures and properly handle confidential information
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- 7–10 years of progressive experience in electrical utility line construction or related field
- Completion of technical training related to substations and specialized equipment
Qualifications
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
- Certification in CPR, First Aid, AED, and bloodborne pathogens
- Ability to perform pole-top rescue within required time standards
- Switching certification (e.g., LCRA or equivalent)
- Strong knowledge of protective relays and basic electrical theory
- Ability to read and interpret maps, construction documents, field notes, and material lists
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Basic computer proficiency (Word, Excel, Outlook, and work order systems)
- Ability to operate heavy equipment and utility vehicles as needed
- Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on safety and continuous improvement
