As a Substitute Aide at Montessori School of Durham, you will take direction from a supervising teammate in most situations. For example, in the case where the Teacher is absent, the Assistant Teacher in the classroom will assume the leadership role, and the Substitute Aide (you) will assume the Assistant’s role.
You will have a list of duties specific to each classroom that will be made available to refer to and to ask for clarification or help where needed.

● Be courteous to parents, children, and other staff
● Maintain confidentiality of information acquired while an employee of the school. Refrain from speaking to others (except staff members) about observations of children or staff; refer questions or comments to a supervising Teacher.
● Wear appropriate attire (non-revealing, slogan-free, comfortable, and presentable)
● Use appropriate language while on campus
● Limit conversations with other adults when supervising children: primary attention should be given to the children at all times
● Maintain the child/adult ratio appropriate for the level in which you are substituting.
○ Infant = 1 adult to 4 children
○ Toddler = 1 adult to 6 children
○ Early Childhood = 1 adult to 12 children
○ Elementary = 1 adult to 20 children
● A replacement must be on-site before a staff member leaves for an emergency.
● Follow Emergency Procedures as required by staff members; assist in filling out Injury Report Forms as needed
● Use appropriate language with children to settle disputes, provide disciplinary actions, and when reminding them of the rules. Ask for assistance from MSD staff, as needed. Refer to the Playground Guidelines for this language.
● Follow the Conflict Resolution Agreement, in the Employee Handbook, when resolving differences with other staff members or with parents.
● Complete timesheets daily. Payday is on or near the 25th of the month. Accurately reflect work hours on the timesheet
Hours of Operation: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday - Friday
